The Secret to Soft Lips

Cold weather has barely arrived, and already my lips are chapped and dry. Pretty soon, if I don’t intervene, they’ll be cracked, red, and painful. I’ve come up with a small arsenal of methods to help protect my lips and keep them healthy in the winter winds. You don’t need to spend a ton of money to protect your lips. Just keep them healthy with some simple strategies and a few lip products. Here are my favorite tricks to heal and protect my chapped lips.

Don’t lick your lips. I don’t know why, but we always have a tendency to lick our lips when they’re dry. It’s counterproductive, though. The more we lick our lips, the drier they become. Eventually, we find ourselves with dry, chapped, painful lips. Make an extra effort in the winter to keep your lips healthy and avoid licking them. Keep a great lipstick or gloss on your lips and you’ll be less likely to lick them. The emollients in lipstick can also help keep your lips soft.

Gently exfoliate your lips. The least expensive way to exfoliate your lips is to use an old, clean toothbrush to gently brush your lips at night. If you don’t have an old toothbrush lying around, you could exfoliate your lips with a bit of brown sugar mixed into a dash of olive oil. Gently rub the mixture on your lips, then rinse it away. For a more spa-like feel, try the Mary Kay Satin Lips Set. Just be sure not to eat the exfoliating scrub!

Moisturize your lips. It seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many times I find myself out and about without a single tube of lip balm on hand. Make sure to keep your favorite lip balm handy: put a tube next to your toothpaste and apply it after you brush your teeth. Keep one in your purse, one in a drawer at the office, and maybe a spare tube in your car, too. Get in the habit of applying it regularly to prevent that uncomfortable, dry, tight feeling.

Choose the right lip product. If you like natural products, then Burt’s Bees makes a terrific lip balm for you. It’s made of beeswax, and has a hint of peppermint to brighten your day. If you like a petroleum based product, try Carmex, which has a great blend of ingredients to soothe and heal dry lips. Of course, there is always the old standby, Chapstick, which comes in all sorts of flavors and types. If you are a die hard Do It Yourself-er, a few Google searches will net you a plethora of great lip balm recipes which are easy and inexpensive to make.

Don’t get dehydrated. Being dehydrated can also cause your lips to be dry, so make sure to drink plenty of fluids, even in the winter months.

The secret to soft lips is preventing them from getting chapped in the first place, so always keep your lip balm, stick, or gloss handy. Remember, a great smile always helps them look their best!
