The Relevance of the Holy Spirit and Prayer

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity is God manifested as -God the Father, God the Son and God The Holy Spirit. The relationship of The Holy Trinity is closely connected. The Holy Spirit is also called The Comforter. The Comforter dwells within us to comfort us and to help us when we pray. Once we have accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior; He, Jesus Christ, comes to dwell within us in the person of The Holy Spirit.
A sinner can only pray a prayer of repentance; he must first accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit will not indwell a sinner. We pray then, “in the name of Jesus Christ.” When we begin to pray to God, we come before (God) with the acute awareness that we need the aid of The Holy Spirit. There are many scriptures that instruct us about The Holy Spirit and the work He does to empower us, to aid us in prayer, to comfort us, guide us and to teach us. Paul tells us in the epistle of Romans and Galatians, the following:

Romans 8:15

“Ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

Galatians 4:6

“God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying Abba, Father.”

The Holy Spirit begins to teach us from our earliest point of coming to Christ and accepting Christ as our Savior. The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us, crying out to God on our behalf. To paraphrase what is found in Romans 8:26-27, we are told that The Holy Spirit helps our infirmities because we don’t know what to pray for as we ought. It says The Spirit groans and makes intercession for us as we are not able to do for ourselves. The Spirit of God, the third person of The Trinity, is able to make our prayers in line with the will of God.

The third person of The Trinity, The Holy Spirit, is called ‘the spirit of holiness;’ He teaches us to be led and directed by divine guidance. He teaches us to witness for Christ and labor for the souls of men. Soul sincere prayer seeks the gentle leading of The Holy Spirit thereby enriching and empowering our prayers to God. To insure the success of our prayers, note what The Lord Jesus said about The Holy Spirit.

John 14:15-18, (NIV) reads:

“If ye love me, keep my commands. (16) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever-(17)the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. (18)I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”

Another name for the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. It is most important to note that obedience is essential to and for the preparation and reception of The Holy Spirit. You can have the assurance that you are hearing and moving by The Holy Spirit.
I John, chapter 4, it tells how to know you are being led by The Holy Spirit.
Here is what it says:

(1)”Beloved believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are goine out into the world. (2) Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confessed that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: (3) And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God:”
