The Mother and Her Young Son

The Mother and Her Young Son

A Short Story by Stephanie Jeannot

A cheery smile grows on her face when she thinks about the wonderful person her son has grown to be. She saw him working the miracles of cruising through life with muscles of his own. Yet, the simple memories of when he was still young continued to keep this leash around his neck. She was not ready to let her little boy be a man.

She knows the truth. He has grown to achieve the impossible in life. The most impossible was getting her to not lay with sleepless eyes worrying about his well-being.

She finally started to let go of her doubts about her young man. She tended to hold on, even a little too tight. But only did it as a means to keep him grounded in good things. She didn’t want him to be pushed in the wrong direction and so, made sure to always be there and always be a part of every single step that he would take; even if he didn’t know.

He had his own mind and was making his own plans. Of course, she had desires of what she wanted and expected him to become. She did all that she could to provide for him in every way that was necessary. She made sure that he studied more than watched television and learned. She nourished him with scholastic truths but also spiritual truth and made sure that he knew who God was, bringing him to church every Sunday. She often tried to put his dreams down to get him to take on hers. But it never worked. He inherited her strong, stubborn characteristics.

He was nesting in his own set of plans. Tears formed in the wells of her eyes when she considered the sweet glittered trail he was on. It was not that she didn’t believe in it but she was afraid that he would fail without her directing his path. The streets are filled with ego testing people who can try to change you to be what they are instead of who you are meant to be. She wanted to make sure he saw the good destiny perceived in her dreams. He was slipping away into his own person in control of his own destiny. He wasn’t a bad kid but she would break down every time she thought about losing him to the world.

She had always been the smothering mother with the master plan clenching her fists around his childhood, not ready to accept that he had grown into a wonderful adult with a good strategy of his own. But now as he grew into the most unique of stars in the sky, she found herself on bended knees more and more. Love beamed even more in her prayers for him. As he continued to step outside of the geographic borders of her grasp, she hoped and prayed that he would survive the universe at large. She wanted him to accomplish things she never had the opportunity to. She nurtured him in ways to build him into a force for the world.

She started to feel proud of the man she had raised him to be. He was a man with direction. A man she could believe in. He was no longer the little boy that used to make sandcastles on the beach. He was instead building dreams that were worth believing in. And so, she let go and let God. And it was the best thing she could have ever done.

Where worry used to be was replaced with accepting. The relationship they had started to grow deeper. They would talk more often on the telephone. They started sharing mutual respect and love. There was no more bickering but now a new height of conversation and debate. They shared and understood each other.

She even went the extra mile that is often needed from a mother to her son. How many times can you say that you encourage your child? It is a necessity; almost as important as food for the body. She wished him a wealth of blessings in his life and it was like sprinkling water on a tall standing sequoia flower. She told him that she loved, respected and believed in him. His smiles turned into beams of sun. He carried her wherever he went in his heart and was able to conquer. She even told him that she had his back and gave of herself without grudges or doubt. Her emotional support was important to his survival. And he did more than just survive, he found a room in one of the corners of the world and settled there.

God continued to pour his beauty into their relationship. Successfully he rose in life. She finally started living a life of her own; doing things she was unable to do while raising him. All he needed now was a little water of her encouragement for life. She was grateful to see that her nagging paid off. And in return her son never forgot where he came from; always acknowledging her for all she had endured and sacrificed to help him be who he was. Sometimes that is the one thing a mother needs to know that her guidance counted. A thank you to let her know that she was a good parent and her child loves her. Sometimes what is needed to be able to make that wonderful connection with your child is to connect with the operator of life; God. Have you told your child that you loved them today? Make sure that you never fail to let them know.
