Taking Green Steps

Many people are becoming more aware of our environmental issues and people are starting to take steps in doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint. There are so many articles online on going green, green products, how to steps and too much information can be overwhelming.

The best way to start going green is by taking the most basic simple steps. Everyone knows their own wasteful habits and with just that information you already know what you need to do to make yourself “green”. If you’re interested in living green don’t take excessive steps because sometimes going from your normal routine and switching it rapidly can backfire. Start out small, do small changes first that you know you can easily accommodate to. The next time you’re shopping try buying CFL light bulbs for your home instead of incandescent light bulbs. Most people buy incandescent bulbs because they’re cheap but CFL light bulbs costs a couple cents more and best of all they save you money, CFL light bulbs are energy savers. If you have always wanted to use reusable grocery bags when you’re out shopping but always forget to bring the bags, leave the reusable grocery bags in your car or leave them in a place where you know you won’t forget.

It is important to get informed on products that you currently use. There are so many chemicals out there that we come across each day, try and be more aware of the products in your house, look up the ingredients in those products and guaranteed you will be amazed and shocked. The Environmental Working Group website has great information on all products from cosmetics, foods and household products. This website gives you information on the level of toxins and possible health hazard. Now that you’re aware of the dangerous chemicals out there, now think about what you can do to reduce waste. If you use plastic water bottles on a daily basis, think about how many people use plastic bottles and where those bottles end up. As you start to think about those kinds of things you will start to make changes unconsciously, instead of using plastic water bottles daily, you’ll change that habit and use a reusable bottle.

Remember that the best way to start making “green” changes is to evaluate yourself first and know what changes you know you can change without hesitation. Also, the next time you’re out shopping remember to be more aware of the products you’re purchasing, think of your health and the environment.
