‘Star Wars: Episode I’ 3D Release Marked by Pens in Big G Cereals

No matter how many times they’re released in theaters in any given format, “Star Wars” films will continue to be a huge draw and marketing dream for licensors. “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” returns to the big screen next week in glorious 3D. It will also be available to see in select theaters in its original 2D format. To get everyone excited, Lucasfilm has teamed with General Mills to offer exclusive collector pens in specially marked boxes of Big G Cereals.

Eight collector pens are available, each showcasing a different character from the first episode of the “Star Wars” saga. They include Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Queen Amidala, Yoda, R2-D2, C-3PO, Jar Jar Binks, and Darth Maul. Each pen comes with a different color ink that represents its iconic character.

The characters are based on their costumes and appearances in “Episode I.” Anakin is the young pod-racer complete with goggles. Darth Maul is hooded with arms crossed. Obi-Wan Kenobi holds his blue lightsaber. Jar Jar Binks, C-3PO, and R2-D2 all look like they usually do. For some reason C-3PO already has his gold plating (he was “naked,” i.e. had wires and mechanisms exposed, in the first prequel). Amidala is in her red kabuki outfit, complete with headdress.

The pens are available in specially marked boxes of Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Reese’s Puffs, and Cookie Crisp. The boxes are plainly marked on the front by a banner stating “Pen Inside; 8 to Collect!” There’s also a picture of one of the characters and a pen with the “Episode I” 3D logo. The cereals with the pen prizes are available in stores now. Get them while you can and May The Force Be You.
