When the acne is severe you will need to get a referral from your family doctor for a dermatologist. It would be wise to be prepared so jot down important information in advance.

Write down any questions you might want to ask your doctor so that you don’t forget.

You will want to know what the treatment will be If there are side affects, especially if you are pregnant or have other medical conditions If there are alternative medications and treatments How long to take the medication and how safe they will be When to expect improvement If you should schedule a follow-up appointment If it is safe to cease taken prescribed medication is not working Are there any self-care procedures to follow such as a change in diet, over-the-counter-medication changes, changes in soaps, lotions, or contraceptives

Be prepared to answer the doctors questions as well such as:

When did you first noticed the acne Can you thing of anything that triggers the acne, such as your menstrual period, stress or eating certain foods, using certain makes or substances on your skin. Are your menstrual cycles normal Are you pregnant or are you thinking about getting pregnant in the near future What soaps, and lotions or lubricants are you currently using how deeply emotionally is your acne affecting your self-esteem and your social life Is there a family history of acne what medications and or home remedies have you already tried
