Riding to the Stars

We always like to ride out to the countryside, somewhere new, late at night. What better way to see the
stars and look for strange lights in the sky. We’re always looking for UFOs. It’s a passion. Our Pumpkin, the orange Harley, is the best ride ever.

We just speed down the highway and it’s like flying on wheels. Tonight, we were out in the countryside, just south and west of Fort Worth. It was a farm road and for the past 15 minutes, not another vehicle had gone by us. We were alone. It was about 2 a.m. and really dark. Hadn’t even seen any animals out in the pasture. That was a little strange but we could hear night sounds of insects once we stopped on the side of the road. The smell of slightly damp grass was wonderful. No traces of humankind except for us.

We left the blue lights turned on that ran along the bottom of the bike. It was a brilliant blue but not obnoxious in the least. Looked like some of those pictures of UFOs with blue lights on the underside that people had seen over the years. As we walked further into the field, we heard little rustlings in the tall grass. I wondered if there were snakes but figured my high top boots would save me from bites. At least I hoped so!

We stopped by a tall tree with huge overhanging branches and rested for a few minutes. I looked back at the bike and it looked far away, blue lights shining in the dark, like a blue cluster of little bugs. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a luminescent blur, an orb shape, just floating in the air down the road from the bike. I focused on it but then it seemed to disappear, fade away to nothing. I blinked and it came back. I wondered if it was a street sign reflecting the moon’s light, but it shimmered … and there was no wind, no breeze to speak of. Then it disappeared again.

I nudged my buddy and whispered in his ear what I had just seen. Just then as I looked over there, the shimmering orb came back into view. My buddy saw it too. Then it looked like it was moving towards the bike, just floating slowly down the road. Headed for the bike. Surely it was just a trick of the eyes. There was no specific shape to it. But it was a taller than wider orb shape, but without real definition. Again it shimmered and then it was gone. We decided we should go back and investigate.

We started heading back to the bike, making as little noise as possible. The grass was slightly damp and it muffled our steps. The shimmering object hadn’t come back yet. It was scary. We held each other’s hand as we slithered through the grass, getting closer and closer to the bike. I kept waiting for the weird luminescent orb to come back but it didn’t.

At the edge of the grass line, we stopped for a moment to see if there was anything down the road that could have been that strange object, but there was nothing. I didn’t see any road signs, nor any people on the road that could have caused that strange reflection from a shirt or jacket. There was nothing.

We both walked quickly to the bike, blue lights shinning just as brightly as if nothing had ever happened. It was a moment of feeling secure again, something normal and stable. My buddy got on the bike and put it upright. I grabbed my helmet and strapped it on. As I prepared to swing my leg over the back end of the bike to get on the rider’s seat, I looked back down the road. Oh my God! That strange light was back … and it was headed towards us. It got larger, I got on the seat and yelled to my buddy, “Let’s go!! Now! It’s back and it’s heading for us.”

My buddy started up the motor and began rolling. As we headed away from there, he finally turned on the headlights and we raced faster on down the road. I looked back again and I saw that strange light in the road still. I kept looking back too as we sped along the road. There was no other sound except the Harley motor but it seemed there was a dead flat silence all around us. With no lights from anywhere around us, we were feeling pretty spooked. What was it we had seen in the road? My buddy had seen that light in his mirrors but wouldn’t turn around for fear of dropping the bike. He had to rely on what I told him as to what happened next. I couldn’t even be sure I had seen it either but it was vivid in my mind. It wasn’t a dream.

Would we come out here again? Yes, probably next weekend … and the next … until we saw it again. In the meantime, I would need to learn how to take nighttime photos without a flash. I had to get pictures … to prove we saw what we saw. To prove to myself that we saw what we saw. I sit in anticipation as I write these words. It’s scary to think about … but exciting … new … different … we must find out who it is. Look for Dragon Queen’s next entry … if I survive.
