My wife had to do some shopping yesterday afternoon and, since I was stuck at home with a sleeping child, I asked her to pick up something for dinner.
I was expecting her to bring home Chinese food (she has been hungry for it all week) but she apparently didn’t like any of the frozen food she saw and ended up picking out something a bit different; an Old El Paso Gordita Dinner Kit.
I personally have never had a gordita before but, when I saw the picture on the box at least, I was interested in trying it. So, since it was about dinner time anyway, she got to work making it.
I honestly wasn’t expecting too much from something that came from a box and really didn’t look much different than the taco dinner kits we normally buy. But, after trying it, I do have to say I was somewhat impressed.
First of all, this product was pretty easy to make. All my wife had to do was fry up the meat she purchased (which was pre-cooked) for the gorditas and add the seasoning packet to it. In total, it only took a few minutes. In fact, I think it took her longer to cut up the fresh garden tomatoes and peppers I picked just for this meal.
As I said before, I had never had a gordita before and wasn’t really sure what to expect taste wise. Since I haven’t had any at a restaurant or anything like that, I have nothing to compare these with. But, I did think they had a decent flavor. The gorditas were somewhat spicy but nothing that was over the top (and the vegetables did give them a fresher taste I think). If nothing else, they were something different from our usual taco dinners.
Another thing I liked about this product was the gorditas were very filling. When we have tacos, I usually need a couple of them. But, I was full after just one of these (though I did end up snacking on some of the tomatoes and peppers separately).
Overall, I would say this dinner kit was worth the money we paid for it. It was a bit more expensive than your traditional taco dinner kit. But, it was definitely something different and I didn’t feel like we spent too much. If you are looking for something that is both different and enjoyable for dinner, I recommend looking for this product.
