Phillies Stack Up Well Against NL Teams Since 2000: A Fan’s Look

The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the oldest franchises in Major League Baseball. They have had a lot of success in the 2000s but it wasn’t always that way. Since 1900, the Phillies don’t have a lot of teams that they have dominated against. In fact, of the 10 teams the Phillies have beaten the most in that span they only have a winning record against three of them. When you consider that the Phillies are the first franchise to ever record 10,000 losses that doesn’t seem like much of a surprise. But the Phillies have been much better since 2000. Here is a look a look at how the Phillies have fared against the National league in terms of wins since 2000. The Phillies have a winning record against all but one.

Washington Nationals – 127

It doesn’t matter if the Phillies were facing the Montreal Expos or the Washington Nationals. They have dominated this team at home and on the road in both locations. The Phillies have only lost 89 times to this franchise and have put up more runs against them since 2000 than any other team.

Atlanta Braves – 114

The Phillies have faced the Braves more than any team in history and have a losing record. However, they have been much better since 2000. The Phillies are 114-101 against the Braves despite Atlanta fielding several division winning teams for half the decade.

Florida Marlins – 114

The Marlins seem like a pesky team and they have broken the hearts of Phillies fans many times. However, the Phillies still own a winning record against them. The teams have never met in the postseason but have had memorable battles. The highlight was Roy Halladay’s perfect game in 2010.

New York Mets – 114

The Phillies have owned the Mets since 2006. They were the beneficiaries of two straight New York collapses in 2007 and 2008. The Phillies have a winning record all-time against the Mets. It’s always nice to have a big edge over a big rival.

Cincinnati Reds – 53

The Phillies are an impressive 53-30 against the Reds since 2000. The teams don’t meet much but it almost always favors the Phillies. The Phillies also swept the Reds in the 2010 playoffs. Halladay tossed only the second no-hitter in postseason history against them.

San Diego Padres – 51

The Phillies own the Padres, especially on the road. Every season it seems like the Phillies sweep the Padres in San Diego. It’s no surprise they have beaten the Padres 64 percent of the time since the 2000 season began.

Milwaukee Brewers – 48

The Phillies are 48-31 against the Brewers. They have beaten them once in the postseason, taking them out in four games in the 2008 NLDS. The margin has been closer in recent years as Milwaukee has continued to improve.

Colorado Rockies – 47

The Rockies and Phillies have each beaten each other once in the postseason since 2007. Still, the Phillies have won 60 percent of the meetings. They have scored 441 runs against the Rockies, the second most against a team not in the National League East.

Chicago Cubs – 46

The Phillies are 46-33 against the Cubs. The Cubs have been up and down in the decade. They have been to the postseason a couple of times but always struggle against the Phillies. The Phillies have a winning record at home and on the road against the Cubs.

Los Angeles Dodgers – 44

The Phillies are 44-37 against the Dodgers. This is one of the few teams the Phillies don’t play well against on the road. However, they have beaten the Dodgers twice in the NLCS since 2008.

St. Louis Cardinals – 44

The Cardinals broke the hearts of Phillies fans in the 2011 playoffs. However, the Phillies hold a slight edge over them in the head to head series. Strangely, the Cardinals are 21-20 in Philadelphia since 2000. The Phillies hold the edge in St. Louis.

Arizona Diamondbacks – 41

Arizona has been a tough out for the Phillies. The edge is a slight one as the Phillies are 41-38 against Arizona. The Diamondbacks have been either really good or really bad in the last decade. The Phillies have a losing record in Arizona.

Pittsburgh Pirates – 40

The Phillies have major problems on the road in this series. The lowly Pirates are 24-14 at home against the Phillies. Fortunately the Phillies own the edge at home and a slight edge in the series.

San Francisco Giants – 39

This is a narrow one. The Phillies are 40-39 against San Francisco. The home team has a major edge since 2000 so it is no surprise that things are that close. The Giants also beat the Phillies in the 2010 NLCS.

Houston Astros – 34

The Astros are the only National League team to beat the Phillies. Despite fielding some awful teams over the past couple of seasons, Houston has managed to sweep the Phillies a couple of times on the road. The Phillies have a losing record at home and on the road.
