Obama to Shrink Government: Good Idea or Bad Idea?

COMMENTARY | President Obama is on a mission to quiet his critics by fulfilling some of his campaign promises. He has pushed “ObamaCare,” a $447 billion jobs bill, and now he is focused on making the government more efficient by eliminating agencies associated with food safety and housing. Not only would it cut $3 billion in spending, it would contribute to a smaller government, not necessarily a smaller role, but the size of it. Considering reducing government is traditionally a Republican move, it appears Obama is trying to capture some Republican votes in the upcoming election, but I’m not sure this is the way he should be doing it.

Contradicting Plan?

It’s fantastic that President Obama is trying to reduce spending, especially at a time when the debt ceiling has been raised to accommodate the bills of the United States. While the reduction is necessary, there may be better ways of getting the job done. First of all, cutting 1,000 jobs and $3 billion in American salaries contradicts President Obama’s campaign of “Hope” and job creation. Secondly, instead of cutting jobs, maybe he should create useful jobs for these people if their current jobs are unnecessary. That would gain votes and help American people.

How Obama’s Plan should be Edited

Cutting programs and jobs is a very sensitive subject, which is why I think President Obama should rethink his plan. Instead of cutting jobs, I believe he would be more successful in reducing spending by cracking down on corruption and getting a full disclosure of where all the money is going. According to the Associated Press, $100 million was wasted through unused airline tickets. There needs to be a crackdown on spending by trusted employees, extravagance, and salaries of government officials.

Will Republicans Vote for Obama?

Absolutely not! True Republicans are ready for a conservative president, and President Obama’s latest plan may seem to appeal to Republicans, but I think it is just an invitation for the Republican candidates to use it against him. Don’t be surprised when they call it a move to get Republican voters, and criticize how many jobs it will be cutting instead of creating. Not only will he lose Republican voters, but President Obama could lose some Democratic voters since job creation is still a priority for many Americans.
