Mitch Daniels for President?

If you’ve been following the Republican primary closely the past few months, then certainly you have heard of Mitch Daniels. Wait a minute. Who? Mitch Daniels, the Governor of Indiana, is not in the running for the Republican bid for president, yet.

Daniels was expected to be one of the frontrunners for the position this time last year, but in May of 2011, he made it clear that he would not be running for president. He stated that he didn’t want to bring his family into such a public spotlight and have them put through the intense scrutiny that accompanies a campaign.

However, on January 24, 2012, Daniels delivered the response to the State of the Union address, thrusting him into a bigger spotlight than ever. There has been nonstop speculation ever since about whether or not Daniels will make a last minute push for the spot.

There are a couple of topics that Mitch Daniels would have a serious upper hand on his opponents if he does jump into this primary election.

Religion

There is no denying that the candidates’ religion is going to end up playing a big part in this election. With such a diverse group of spiritual beliefs, something a little simpler could be an advantage.

With a large percentage of Republican voters being Evangelical, they are going to want someone on the ballot that they can relate to in their faith. Mitt Romney has answered his share of questions for his belief in Mormonism, which has even been referred to as a cult. Newt Gingrich recently converted to Catholicism, making that the third religion of his lifetime. People have questioned his motives behind these changes, whether they were political or truly spiritual.

Daniels is a Presbyterian, plain and simple. But he is not over-the-top about it like other candidates have been, making it clear that his religion is not the platform he would be running on.

Fiscal Plan

For those of you who may not know, before Mitch Daniels was Governor of Indiana, he served under President George W. Bush as Director of Office Management and Budget. During his time as governor, he has displayed his expertise in fiscal planning, and the citizens of Indiana re-elected him because of it. This is what the country is looking for in a president right now, someone to get the economy back on track.

Romney has been criticized for the enormous holes in his fiscal plan, as it has lofty goals but no actual plan to make it happen.

Daniels still has not expressed a desire to begin a campaign, but there is a growing number of people hoping he will, as you will see if you visit www.runmitchrun.com.
