By now, the entire world is aware that Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humphries after only 72 days of marriage. And while many celebs have had quickie divorces, this one is causing a major stir due to the fact it reportedly cost 10 million dollars and was broadcast in a four hour television special. Now there appears to be a major backlash against the reality star, painting her in a very unflattering light. The question is, why exactly is the public so up in arms?
One major reason Kim is feeling the heat of the public is that many believe her entire marriage was a hoax. She reportedly made $17 million from her television special and pictures sold to various magazines. She and her mother, Kris Jenner, have both refuted this claim, but the damage has already been done. Her wedding spectacle has caused many people to view her as simply materialistic and money hungry. More materialistic than previously thought, anyway.
Kim has also continued her life as if nothing happened. Directly after filing for a divorce, that her husband supposedly knew nothing about, she hopped a plane to Australia to promote her Kardashian Kollection with her sister Khloe. The public seemed to be a bit shocked by this, since many were expecting Kim to lay low during such a tumultuous time. It’s a bit disconcerting that she couldn’t take a few days away from the spotlight to reflect.
And finally, Kim’s divorce has raised questions about the sanctity of marriage. On Perez Hilton’s website is a tweet from openly gay actor George Takei, in which he sarcastically says “Another example of how same-sex marriage is destroying the sanctity of the very institution.” Sharon Osbourne is also quoted as saying “The thing is, there are millions of people in this country who are gay or lesbian who have been together for years, who want to unite as one and they can’t. But yet you can go and have a silly marriage.” Perhaps Kim should think about the concern of the public if she wants to maintain a certain image, because the negative comments surrounding her don’t seem to be going anywhere.
