Ideas for Hallway Cabinets

Are you tired of the flat, boring hallway walls in your home? Then it’s time to install a hallway cabinet. From book shelves to niches, cabinets in your hallway give the space added style and dimension. You can use them to house a prized book collection or pieces of sculpture. Let me show you how.

• Full Wall Double Door Shelving

Why would you have just a plain hallway wall when you can have so much more? If you have a double-door hall entrance to one of your rooms, you can create a full wall of shelving that wraps around the door opening in less than ten inches of space. Use 1″ x 10″ inch lumber to build shelves on either side of the doors and overhead along the ceiling. Add decorative molding to the top and bottom of the structure, paint it all white and you’ll craft a large, built-in shelving unit that will create a dramatic entrance to your room and make your entry hall so much more interesting.

• Glass Front Cabinets

Take the shelving unit idea a step further by adding decorative glass cabinet doors to the front of structure. Whether you add built-in shelving around an entrance or along a plain hallway wall, glass front cabinet doors will add an enhanced architectural beauty to the space.

• Drama Alcoves and Display Niches

If you wall to generate real drama in your hall, create a built-in unit with shelves below and alcoves above – complete with arched front openings. Install spotlights in the ceiling to shine on the subjects in the wall unit and you’ll have your own art gallery in a hallway wall cabinet.

• Embellishing Your Cabinetry

Once you’ve installed a basic cabinet in your hallway, you can dress it up and embellish it in many ways. Add cabinet doors to bottom shelves. Attach ornate moldings in between each shelving unit. Install more molding along the floor and ceiling. The fancier the molding, the fancier the hallway cabinet you’ll get. You can even bring in decorative baskets in an entry hall unit to drop your keys into or other items you want readily accessible when you pass through.
