How to Overcome Depression

How To Overcome Depression

Well this is a very gentle topic, but let’s face it people are depressed. People are depressed about money, about being single or being married, having a job they hate or not a job at all, being too thin or too fat. Yes, people are depressed. I am usually a pretty honest person and I try not to dwell on it or make it known but I’m one of the depressed people in the world. I am one of the 19 million Americans (according to allaboutdepression.com) that do indeed suffer from depression.

There are a number of types of depression; I’m not talking about oh “I’m sad for like 15 minutes because I stubbed my toe”. No, I’m talking about “I have this deep dark pit at the bottom of my stomach and I can’t seem to get out of it.” That’s depression. That is feeling despair so deep that even chocolate can cheer you up! How sad is that! Imagine a world where chocolate has no power? I know you’re wondering what must a person do to get over these terrible disorders, this thing that has basically made you a shell of your former self.

So Here is my opinion if you want it and I’m no expert I’ve just been depressed for about 10 years off and on and was just recently depressed this morning. I like helping people who may be depressed or has some type of mental illness. I feel that if someone knows that other people suffer from the same thing then maybe they will not be afraid!

Get Help:

Yes, help! Talk to someone, it really is helpful to sit and talk with someone other than your friends! Friends are great but you can only tell them so much. Some things go beyond years of girl talk & sharing tears over a boyfriend. Some things go deeper than parents and while talking God about our problems is the up most of importance sometime you need a real life person. I know I will be shot by one of my Christian friends but some times you need professional help. It’s just a fact!

Don’t Be Afraid of Medication:

Yes, I know the idea of meds have you thinking that you are indeed insane! You feel that you are one step away from the padded cell or walking the streets muttering to yourself about nothing. But my theory is if some people do not take meds then those are the ones that end up crazy. And NO I’m not speaking of Mariaquana or borrowing your friends Prozac! You need a Psychiatrist to prescribe it for you! And the Psychiatrist and your therapist will figure out what’s best for you. The important thing is not to be afraid and to get help.

Be Active:

It’s the one thing you can do to help yourself. Do the things you love! Read, go to the movies, go to a play, travel if you can, just do something! I tend to read a lot! Or watch a string of 80 movies, or gamble, that only makes it worse so make sure you do something constructive! Being depressed can push you to do unhealthy things as well and you want to try to avoid them because they will just increase your depression! I need to take my own advice.

Never Give Up:

I know, I know, I know you are down. I know there seems to be no silver lining in site but there truly is! I also know that everyone is not a Christian, and even those who are struggling to stay true to their faith in Jesus. I struggle everyday, especially when I’m depressed and feeling alone, poor, lost, I just want to just quit. Do nothing, stay in bed all day and all night. I don’t won’t to work, I don’t won’t to write. All I do is compare myself to other people why do they have this God, why don’t I have that God. But then, “I look around and I think things over and I say all of my good days out way my bad days and I won’t complain”. Whatever it is you believe in, whatever it is that motivates you, grab onto it and never give up! This to shall pass! For me it’s the cutest little boy ever and knowing that God put me on this earth for a reason (he has yet to tell me what!) but I know it’s a reason!

You’re not alone in this fight for mental health everyone is struggling for some peace of mind, or trying to get over something that wounded them oh so many years ago. The important thing to do is to keep pressing forward and believe in something higher than yourself.
