How to Decorate for Christmas on a Budget

Each year as Thanksgiving ends and the Christmas season begins, there’s something simply magical about bringing out our Christmas decorations and transforming our homes into a winter wonderland. However, Christmas decorations can often be costly and can bring more frustration than joy.

My husband and I recently moved into our very first house which is much bigger than our apartment. What seemed to be a bounty of Christmas decorations last year seemed rather lacking when I placed them in our open floor plan home. With lots of space but very little money to purchase decorations, I was forced to be creative and really think outside the box. I’ve discovered a few economical ways to decorate my whole house for Christmas and I’d love to share them with you!

Skip the Department Stores
I was quite surprised when I visited my local dollar store to discover the amount of Christmas decorations and party goods that they had in stock. I was able to score lots of colored glass ball ornaments, garland, poinsettias, sprays, ribbon and other wreath supplies at unbeatable prices. Many of the objects, especially the glass ball ornaments, are equal in quality to more expensive brands. No one has to know they came from the Dollar Store, we can keep that our little secret.

Use What You Already Have
I realized that I already have plenty of glass vases sitting around, so I simply removed the existing flower arrangements and temporarily replaced them with pine cones, poinsettias and other Christmas decor. Use some Christmas ribbon to add a bow and you’ll have a perfect Christmas centerpiece in no time. After Christmas is over, simply switch out the greenery again and store your Christmas florals in a box or gift bag until next year.

Do It Yourself
As you are browsing the Christmas store, examine the wreaths and centerpieces that catch your eye and you may be surprised to see that you can easily replicate them yourself at a fraction of the cost. Many craft stores offer coupons online for as much as 40% off, so with just a few dollars and a craft session at home, you can have beautiful decor that looks designer, but with a personalized touch.
There are also lots of great websites that offer creative and unique ideas for home-made Christmas decorations. This tip may seem obvious, but start browsing for ideas and I’m certain you’ll come across something you have never thought of before!

Shop the After Christmas Sales
Most stores mark down all of their Christmas decor 50% off or more as early as the day after Christmas. This is when you do want to hit up your favorite department stores and stock up on new ornaments and decorations for next Christmas.

Best wishes to you and yours!
