High School Students: Three Tips to Remember If You Go to Vocational School

Going into a vocational program can be a very fun and exciting way to prepare you for life after high school and a promising career. I spent my junior and senior year of high school in a vocational program for Allied Health and have experienced a lot of positive and negative aspects of the program. If you are thinking about going to a vocational school then here are three things you need to remember about this opportunity for your future.

1. If you go to a vocational school then you need to realize that you will need to keep really good grades throughout the program. In order to get accepted into Allied Health I had to keep a 3.0 grade point average during my freshman and sophomore years, which means your grades really do make a difference. Once you are in the program of your choice you should strive to maintain the highest grade point average possible because a lot of vocational programs ready you for transition into college and your career path. Keeping a high grade during your time at the vocational school will also likely show the teacher you mean business and this might help you land a job while you are in high school. I have personally known people that I went to vocational school with land jobs through the recommendation of a teacher and it was always the students that had the best grades and showed determination to succeed at their work.

2. You also need to remember that just because you are in an alternative program, you are still in school and need to act properly and follow school rules. I saw a lot of students have a hard time in vocational programs because they thought this was a time to goof off and get out of their school in general. If you go to a vocational school you are technically still a student of your home school and still represent them in the program, so you need to keep that in mind if you think you can just do whatever and get away with it. Most vocational programs I have found actually require more of you as far as personal conduct goes compared to just regular high school, so if you are immature then you should not even think about going into a vocational program. Vocational schools also are seen by many people in the community and people from your community might come into the school for a haircut for example, so you need to stay focused and follow the rules to ensure your safety and the safety of those that are from the outside. The Allied Health program I was involved with was more careers focused and college focused so we were always held to a high standard and had to follow the same rules we would have if we were in our home school.

3. As a student going to vocational school you also need to realize that you need to keep a more professional attitude and put away the more personal side of yourself. When you are in a program at vocational school the goal is to learn about a career and educate yourself so you will have a good life doing what you want to do. You do not want to be acting out in rude ways or inappropriate ways and by this I mean talking about partying the night before, drinking or getting involved with someone and going to bed with them. I like to call these personal issues and just like if you were at work, they should not be shared with the public or coworkers and basically vocational school programs are like your job. If you want to get into a career path then you need to act like an adult and someone that can handle a real job, so talking about these types of situations are frowned upon. Having a professional attitude also means not giggling or laughing about the materials you are trying to learn, which is really important in the health care field where you learn about sex and anatomy. Acting professional while you are learning in your vocational program will ready you quicker for life outside of high school and the real working world, where not everyone will find your nasty jokes funny.

If you follow these three tips then you will become successful at your vocational school and in your vocational program. Vocational schools and programs are fun and educational but you need to make sure that it is indeed the right place for you while you are in high school.
