Guidelines for Vacationing Safe Abroad

Vacationing abroad can be an exciting and memorable experience for anyone; however, not being safe and following common sense can lead to heartaches and frustration. In many countries, tourists have had their belongings and documents stolen. Here are some tips for vacationing safe abroad.

1. Photocopy all documents such as credit cards, photo identification and other documents. Keep these documents in a safe and secure place. This can be used in place of stolen documents.

2. Walk in groups. Many tourists have had their wallet stolen when they walk with by themselves. Wear comfortable clothes and try to fit in with the locals. Many natives usually target tourists to exploit.

3. Do not go socializing after 7 or 8 pm in the night alone. This makes you more susceptible to being a victim of heinous acts.

4. Travel light and smart. Do not bring expensive items such as iPods with you. A cell phone is sufficient.

5. Do not give money to panhandlers or offer information about your itinerary to anyone. This could cause more problems than you need.

6. Do not bring or leave expensive jewelry and cash in your hotel or motel. This can be stolen by employees working at the hotels

7. Use an ATM or credit card to obtain extra money.

8. Make sure you have insurance on laptops so they can be replaced.

9. Most places have internet café where you can check your email and surf the internet .

10. Learn a few phrases and sentences in the native’s language to communicate better with them

11. Inform kids never to talk to anyone that approaches them and keep near to you

12. Do not give rides or roadside assistance to strangers since this can jeopardize your safety

13. It is easier when you know a native before vacationing in a foreign country.

14. Sometimes you can hire a tour guide to assist you for a day.
