This free EFL/ESL conversation activity/game puts into debate the importance and relevance of certain themes in our society. Students give reasons in English as to why it is or isn’t. For example, “reality shows” or “sports” could be a theme. Is either one of them really needed? “Needs and Desires” is an EFL/ESL conversation activity/game can be used as standalone material or together with an EFL/ESL coursebook.

Step 1: Choose five to ten themes/topics together with the group. Write them on the board.

Step 2: Invite students to debate whether or not each of the themes/topics is really needed in the world. Have students give reasons and write them down on the board/flipchart. An example could be “drugs”, “food” and “crime”. Encourage students to think what the world would be like without the theme/topic in discussion.

Step 3: Make notes of any mistakes and/or improvements that could be made and go over them with the group.
