Fasting, Feasting

The debate over Lokpal bill continues even as the country is coping with various scams, controversies, achievements and a general awakening of the year gone by, and it’s that time of the year when everyone’s out celebrating, feasting royally on the baked goods and others foods fit for royalty, the winter session of the Parliament has taken up the amendment of the lokpal bill.

After several rallies, fasts and uprisings that started in the middle of 2011 and will continue till 2012 if nothing concrete happens as wanted by Anna Hazare the man behind the jan lokpal bill, his version of the Government’s lokpal bill.

So as Christmas arrived on one side, on the other side Anna Hazare – our santa with the promise of a corruption free society arrived in Mumbai for a three day fast, it all started here at South Mumbai’s Azad Maidan with practically the whole city coming to a standstill and gathering at the grounds, singing praises in support of the man and the whole town being coloured in patriotic hues ,the common man who had had enough was finally being heard, later after much promise when the Government failed to keep it’s word, the protest moved to the capital , with an even stronger support of the public from far away towns and villages, from 7-70 year olds all gathered at one open space in the city’s centre like Tahrir square, and nothing deterred them from giving up, jailing Anna made an even more powerful impact and the Government did it’s best to lose support of the people, never before was a bill passed so quickly in the history of Indian democracy all thanks to one man.

things went back to where it all started, in Mumbai came the man -Santa- Anna with his team-reindeers and staged the fast again. But being an old man, his health was deteriorating and even though he’s very fit but was advised by the doctors at JJ hospital to break the fast and right now as the bill is being passed in the parliament he’s resting in the hospital with hopes of seeing a corruption free country soon.

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Mr. Prithviraj Chavan has urged Mr. Hazare to quit the fast as the bill is being debated upon and mostly everything will be in his favour, and when in the beginning, hundreds of people from Mumbai came out in his support this time the response was luke-warm , maybe it’s that time of the year where people like feasting more than fasting and 3 days to go before we usher in 2012, let’s see how does the battle for a corruption free country unfold and will the people have to continue their surge fasting or will we finally get to feast?
