Fashion Alternative Model

What exactly is cosmetology to the average person? Some people will say hair and makeup while others will emphasize hair, skin, nails, and make up. Cosmetology is basically a term used to encompass a broad range of specialty areas. So what exactly is the definition of cosmetology? Defined, it is “the art and science of beautifying and improving the skin, nails, hair, and study of cosmetics and their application.

Today in Modern Society you see beautification practices everywhere you go. Mainly in the Northern Virginia Area I see a lot of Women getting those rich deep tans and highlights, even hair extensions! Some look very much like Californian women I saw Last summer. For me and many of the younger more expressive adults and teens in the area, bold color and cuts are prime choice. Like fashion trends the hair and make-up trends follow the season.

From Boho to Chic, solid color statements to Wild pattern parings, you can see a multitude of fashion. Let’s talk on another subject that somewhat ties in to all of this, Modeling and Photography. Most if not all High fashion run way models are tall lean and literally almost as flat as a sheet of paper. I myself am an Alternative Model. I do not fit these high standards because of my height and my obsession with my tattoos.

While I am not a runway model I still model for myself and things I enjoy that show off the time and care I put into each piece of art work on my skin. Now I get stared at by people much older then I and sadly tattoos are still looked down upon. Everyone has tattoos these days it’s not as taboo as it had been before honestly. I mean look at the celebrities in Hollywood.

Saturday evening Paul Mitchell the School Tyson’s corner hosted a breast Cancer fashion show. I not only modeled in the show I assisted with the make-up and hair. Everyone made sure their model looked perfect. Some people had subtle touches to their work other went all out. Women should embrace their bodies and features they love about themselves. Just keep pushing forward, I know I am and maybe I’ll get on the cover of a Fashion magazine one day. I know even if I don’t I worked hard to love myself and carry my head high because of it.

Have you noticed how lately more and more women are opting for a more natural look? Mind you I see plenty of women still coming in for high lights, covering their stubborn grey hair, and getting a voluminous blow out. Eat healthy be more active less toxins in your body! These are the messages we’re trying to promote. Do you agree with it?

Last night I was flipping tirelessly through a fashion magazine and I stopped recognizing a model in a perfume ad. That small gap in her teeth reminded me of Sookie (Anna Paquin) from True blood. A few pages later she was there again this time modeling clothing for Calvin Kline. It started to dawn on me though.how many Alt models do you see in magazines? Mind you there are quite a few magazines that I adore.

Magazines like Gothic Beauty, ALT mag, and INK all feature tattooed beauties. So why cant the glamor magazine feature the beautiful Alternative models as well? I do remember Raquel Reed walked a runway show for Ed Hardy one year. And John Gilliano’s use of nontraditional models in one of his fashion shows. Fashion is as unique and diverse with every season, so shouldn’t the strand of models be the same?
