Encouraging Bible Verses

When you become a Christian, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that your life doesn’t become perfect. You still go through difficulties. You have bad days and sometimes, really bad days. The very good news is that God knows this and His Word speaks directly to those who are downcast, struggling, and hurting.

When I have been at my lowest points in life, I have found that God’s Word can speak to the heart and soul in ways that nothing else can.

Here is a list of 5 verses that have been especially encouraging to me in difficult times over the years. I truly hope that you find encouragement in them as well.

1. James 1:12 (NIV): “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”

When times have been really tough, God has always used this verse to encourage me. It reminds me that God gives the strength to persevere and finish strong. Its message is “don’t give up” – a message that we all need to hear many times. God says that He has promised a crown of life to those who love him. Let’s not give up in our faith, because nothing can measure up to everything that we have in Christ!

2. Philippians 3:10-12 (NIV): “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”

This verse has also been a favorite of mine for years. As a Christian, I often can feel like I’m not where I should be in my walk with Christ. This verse reminds me that even Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament, was also in imperfect follower of Christ. Life isn’t about becoming perfect – it’s about pressing on after Jesus.

3. Micah 7:7-8 (NIV): “But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me. Do not gloat over me, my enemy! ThoughI have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.”

The context of this verse is that it is written to the Israelites, yet it has struck a chord for me personally as well. No matter what kind of darkness you go through, God hears you and will be your light as you trust in Him. Nothing, no enemy, can take this hope away from you.

4. Psalm 94:19 (NASB): “When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul.”

This is a verse that I apparently never noticed until a few days ago. It struck me as extremely relevant for my life (and many others’ lives!). Many of us struggle with anxious thoughts, fear, and uncertainty. Sometimes the thoughts are overwhelming. However, God is clear in His Word that anxiety is not His desire for us. The Holy Spirit is here to console and guide believers. Rest in the confidence that God’s Word is true, God is faithful, and He gives us everything we need.

5. Matthew 9:13-14 (NASB): “But go and learn what this means: ‘I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT SACRIFICE,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

What better news is there than this? The Christian life is not about having it all together! It’s about growing in love for the Lord and being made morel like Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit. God desires compassion, not showy righteousness. He wants our love, not empty rituals. Be encouraged by this and don’t beat yourself up when you feel like a failure. Remember what it’s all about!
