DIY Computer Repair Project: How to Fix RAM on Your Desktop Computer

RAM, also called random access memory, is the space on which your computer reads and writes data. Most people refer to RAM as the computer’s memory. If your RAM is too full or fragmented, you can experience several computer problems. These can include applications running slowly, troubles installing programs, problems burning CDs and frequent freezing of your computer. If you are experiencing any of these problems, you can attempt to fix the RAM easily at home. Here are some ways I fix the RAM on my desktop computer.

What You’ll Need
Grounding wrist strap
Anti-static bag
Alcohol or commercial electrical contact cleaner
New RAM

Safety First, Make Sure You’re Grounded
The first step of every DIY computer repair is to follow basic safety precautions. Whenever you work on the inside of your computer, make sure you unplug all of the cables in the back, front, side and top of the computer. Whenever you work on your computer, you want to avoid the dangers of static electricity by using a grounding strap. While there are other methods of grounding that don’t require the strap, my husband, who is an electrician, has always recommended I use the wrist strap. I prefer a grounding strap because then I don’t have to think about grounding and it frees up my mind to concentrate on the repair at hand. The grounding strap will have directions for use, which you should follow exactly. Make sure that you attach the grounding strap to something that is grounded. Do not attach it to the computer itself in any way. I always attach my strap to a properly grounded electrical outlet box. If you are unsure of what is safe, contact a licensed electrician.

Locating the RAM
Open up the case of your computer. You may have to remove screws to do this, but most computers don’t have any screws. Look for rows of long computer chips that stick out about an inch high and are perpendicular to the motherboard. This is the RAM.

Removing the RAM
Once you have located the RAM, removing it is easy. Locate the small levers at either end of the RAM. Gently push these levers down at the same time. This should cause the RAM to pop up. Touching only the edges of the RAM, remove it and place it in an anti-static bag. You can get these from any computer repair store. If you let the store know that you’ll be buying a new RAM from them, they are often willing to give you the anti-static bag for free.

Cleaning the RAM
Sometimes, you can experience problems because the RAM is not making the proper connections. Always try cleaning the RAM connections before replacing your RAM. This may be all that is needed to fix the problem. Pull the RAM out of the computer. Using alcohol or a commercial electrical contact cleaner, gently clean the contacts. Make sure the RAM is completely dry before reinserting it back into the computer. Never spray cleaner on the motherboard, power supply or any other internal part.

Re-Seating the RAM
Another easy fix is to try re-seating the RAM. To re-seat the RAM, gently push on the center edge, top and bottom of the RAM. If there is any movement when you do this, then a poorly seated RAM was most likely the problem. Restart your computer. If problems persist, you may have to replace the RAM.

Replacing the RAM
If cleaning and re-seating the RAM doesn’t solve your problems, it may be necessary to replace the RAM. You may also want to replace the RAM to increase your computer’s memory capabilities. First, remove the RAM and place it in an anti-static bag. Write down the manufacturer and model of motherboard you have and take both to your local computer supply store. They can help you select the correct RAM for your computer. The manufacturer and model number of your motherboard can be found in the documentation that came with your computer or on a white sticker or silk screen on the edge of the board.

Disclaimer: Whenever you work on the inside of your computer, you accept all risks for any problems, damage or injuries that may result. My advice does not replace that of a certified computer professional or licensed electrician.
