Creative Ways to Use an Unused Dining Room

While dining rooms are traditionally used for family meals and gatherings, you may find that yours has simply become an empty space in your home or a storage space for boxes and other odds and ends you have no room for in other rooms in your home. If you have a dining room that you don’t really use, remodeling the space to use for a different purpose is highly practical. Your dining room can easily be used as another type of room to help utilize space and maximize storage. Whether you are looking to add a home office or an additional bedroom, your unused dining room may offer the perfect solution. Here are some creative ways you can use your unused dining room.

Library

If you are a passionate reader with a large book collection, transform your unused dining room into a library to store and showcase your favorite books. Purchase bookshelves to keep your books organized within the space. Add a comfortable chair for you to relax in while you read. Other furniture to consider placing in your new library include a side table and an ottoman, as well as a floor or ceiling lamp to provide proper lighting for reading. Decorate your library with attractive paintings and flowing curtains to make the space warm and inviting.

Bedroom/ Guestroom

An enclosed dining room can easily be converted into an additional bedroom or guestroom so long as the windows and other features meet fire and safety regulations in your city. To use your dining room as a bedroom, move a bed and dresser into the dining space and decorate to your liking. You may also need to add an armoire to provide closet space for shoes and clothing. To turn your unused dining room into a guestroom, move a daybed or twin-sized bed in to provide sleeping space for guests, as well as a side table and a small dresser. Unused dining rooms are the perfect size for nurseries, so this is a great way to make room for your new baby if you live in a small house or apartment.

Home Office

If you have always wanted to have a home office, your unused dining room is the perfect place to add one to your home. Have the dining room wired for Internet, or make sure the space has access to a wireless Internet router for your computer. Set up your desk, computer, printer, fax machine, phone and any other office items you have in the dining room and decorate it as you wish.

Craft Room

Are you an avid crafter who has found your home overrun with scrapbook paper, beads and other craft supplies? Turn your dining room into a craft room to provide you with space to organize your materials and focus on your work away from the rest of your house. Set up a work table in the room and add drawers and shelves to store all of your crafting supplies.

Family Game Room

An unused dining room of any size can be transformed into a game room that is fun for the entire family. For a video game room, hook up a TV and all of the necessary consoles and provide a few comfortable chairs or a small couch for seating for seating. Larger dining rooms can be used for table games, such as pool, foosball or air hockey. Add a few small bookshelves to the room to store and display your video and board games, or install shelves on the wall to free up floor space.
