Celebrating Thanksgiving in Southern Arizona

Arizona is sure to come to life this Thanksgiving with feasts and lights ushering in the holiday season. Whether you are just passing through Arizona or a local looking to spend Thanksgiving in the community, here are some events and venues to definitely check out…:

Zoo Light

455 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix, AZ 85008

The Phoenix Zoo fire on their 3.5 million light display, Zoo Lights, beginning on Thanksgiving evening. Attractions include some 600 lighted sculptures, a gigantic 3D praying mantis, and Jengo — the talking giraffe.

The Zoo will be accommodating its nightly light show from 6 – 10PM until Jan. 8th. Tickets can ordered online, by phone or at the gate.

Arizona Celebration of Lights
5001 N. 99th Ave., Glendale, AZ 85035

Located in Greater Phoenix, the Arizona Celebration of Lights is a one mile light display, complete with tunnels and arches, illuminated by more than 7 million lights. At the end of the display is Santa’s Village where children can enjoy various attractions — like train or pony rides — and take pictures with Santa.

The park is open until Jan.1st, Mon – Thurs, 6 – 9PM and Fri – Sun, 6 – 10PM. Be sure to order your tickets online to save 10$ per admission.

Thanksgiving Cross-Country Classic

Kicking off in Tucson on Thanksgiving Day is the Thanksgiving Cross-Country Classic. This event is comprised of a seperate 5K run for men and women and also a 1.5 mile co-ed fun run/walk. The race itself will start at Reid Park, Ramada 10 and will benefit for Toys for Tots.

Registration is required and can be done online, or at The Running Shop on Nov.19th and Nov. 21-23rd.

Turkey Day 5K – Phoenix

Phoenix is working up their Turkey Day appetite with a 5K run all their own. On Nov. 24th, the Turkey Day 5K will start at Wesley Bolin Plaza at 8AM. For complete details, be sure to visit the official race website.

Registration can only be done online until the Nov. 22. Event parking will be provided.

And for those traveling passing through, or locals opting for a Turkey Day take-out, many local resturaunts in Tucson and Phoenix will be in business to provide a hearty Thanksgiving feast at affordable prices. Click each city name for a good base listing for each.
