A Fresh Take on Fantasy

Grave Dance by Kalayna Price, released for sale in July 2011 is the second book in her Alex Craft series. Alex Craft is a grave witch. She not only sees and interacts with the dead, she can make them visible to others. She has her own magic-eye agency which specializes in solving crimes by raising the dead.

The local police have asked her to help out with their latest case. Receding flood waters have turned up three human feet — all left feet. Alex is unable to tell much about the owners of the feet because the grisly remains are saturated with some sort of spell that blocks all other information.
Tracking down the owners of the left feet and learning how they lost them takes Alex into some bizarre situations, including a visit with the Fae, discovering she has an inheritance, close encounters with her past and consolidating her relationship with her lover.

Ms. Price meets all my criteria for a good fantasy mystery. She does an excellent job of world building, her characters are believable and none are omnipotent. She introduces all the clues early in the book and the internal rules for the way her physical world behaves and the laws of magic are well established. Even though the clues are introduced early, they are not obvious, creating a proper “who-dun-it” for mystery enthusiasts.
