2012 First Base (1B) Deep Sleepers

Justin Smoak – Sea – 1B (25)

Entering the 2011 season as the undisputed starter at first base in the Seattle Mariners everyday lineup, Smoak struggled mightily as a hitter and failed to display any type of consistency at the plate. Once considered an elite prospect and potential All-Star, Smoak’s high profile status as a future star in the majors has dimmed considerably. However there is still plenty of potential for Smoak to become an excellent major league player, and therefore he should be considered a top post-hype prospect sleeper heading into the 2012 season. 20 home runs and 70 RBI are definitely within reach for Smoak in 2012.

2011 Major League Stats: 427 AB, 38 R, 15 HR, 55 RBI, 0 SB, .234 AVG

2012 Stat Projections: 55 R, 20 HR, 70 RBI, 0 SB, .270 AVG

Anthony Rizzo – ChC – 1B (22)

After a huge breakout showing at the plate to begin the 2011 season at Triple-A, Rizzo seemed like a guaranteed bet to succeed whenever he would get the call to the majors to make his debut. Unfortunately when Rizzo did make his major league debut in early June for the Padres last season, he struggled mightily to adjust to major league pitching. Entering the 2012 season having been traded to the Chicago Cubs, Rizzo is the clear first baseman of the future in Chicago. However at just age 22, Rizzo may begin the 2012 season in the minors rather than in the Cubs everyday lineup. Yet based on Rizzo’s power hitting and run producing potential, the rebuilding Cubs will likely want to give their potential franchise player plenty of playing time at some point during the 2012 season.

2011 Minor League Triple A Stats: 356 AB, 64 R, 26 HR, 101 RBI, 7 SB, .331 AVG

2011 Major League Stats: 128 AB, 9 R, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 2 SB, .141 AVG

2012 Stat Projections: 45 R, 12 HR, 50 RBI, 5 SB, .265 AVG

Brandon Allen – Oak – 1B (26)

Coming to Oakland in a mid-season trade last year, Allen was given an opportunity to take over as the Athletics everyday starting first baseman to finish out the 2011 season. Unfortunately, Allen did not take full advantage of his opportunity and playing time, as he only managed to post mixed results as a run producing hitter in the Athletics lineup. However with the starting first base job open for the taking in Oakland to begin the 2012 season, Allen is a high upside power hitting option who could finally break out as a major league hitter in 2012.

2011 Minor League Triple A Stats: 345 AB, 79 R, 21 HR, 72 RBI, 7 SB, .298 AVG

2011 Major League Stats: 175 AB, 23 R, 6 HR, 18 RBI, 3 SB, .200 AVG

2012 Stat Projections: 70 R, 20 HR, 75 RBI, 5 SB, .250 AVG
