Dog Food, What Do You Feed???? And Why?
Q: Okay, I need some help here please from all you expert dog owners and breeders….I am now feeding Taste of the Wild, and my dogs have been on it for well over a year now.I am in Lexington, Ky right now, I went to the local feed store and bought my ususal size bag of TOTW.I got back to my friends house, opened the food to feed all my boys, I put it down for Demon first, hardly sniffed it, took his front paw and dumped it and walked away…He has never done this before. Then I put the food down for Koda, Bear and Nikki, all my dogs hardly sniffed it and left it, would not return to the bowl area at all.I took up the food, smelled of it, it smelled funny, I opened the huge bag up, took a good wiff, it smelled very strong of something, it kinda burned my nose….I put the food back into the bag, took it back to the feed store, the men there said it did not smell right, they pulled some other bags, opened them and they had the same smell…..I ask had they put this food by any chemicals in the back before putting it out in front to be sold, I was told, no never, the feeds are on one side and the chemicals and pesticides in a different part of the warehouse in back.I then went to a different feed store, told them what had happened and they checked one of their smaller bags, they opened it, it had such a strong burning smell to the smell, they pulled their bags as well.Has anyone else had any problems with Taste of the Wild?? My dogs have always loved this food and do so great on it……..I also called my local feed store back home, and Bill put me on hold, came back, he said he had opened a bag, and it smelled just fine, no strong odors…So, could it be this shipment to Lexington been bad for just this area…….Has anyone else had problems with Taste of the Wild, Please let me know.I kept a quart size bag of it out and have shipped it to Taste of the Wild today, to the manufacturer of this shipment for this area only….The Texas Area manufacturer does not ship to KY anywhere…I have also went on line and emailed TOTW customer service to see what they say…I cannot find any recalls for them, I have never seen recalls for TOTW…..Also, does anyone feed Wellness, I have never used this dog food, and hear it is very good, I went to Petco today and got Wellness Chicken Formula Dry….all my dogs ate it really good…..I do like the ingredients in it better than TOTW, so may change to Wellness totally now….Legit::;What dog food do you feed and why……And does anyone on YA feed Wellness and if you do, please let me know what you think of it…A neighbor of my friend here feeds all his Golden’s Wellness she said, so I talked to them, and their dogs look really good.Thank you for responding….Please star, I want as many opinions on Wellness as I can get……From what I have seen on the ingredients and their website has really good ingredients, no byproducts at all.Again, thank you very much….Have found out there is a recall of TOTW like someone else posted as well on the June and July 2010 bags.both had these dates on them…great sources of info folks, your all so terrifc……
A: I feed TOTW and just bought 2 bags Wed. 1 High Prairie and 1 Pacific Salmon. I have not had any problems with it nor has any of the people I know that feed it.If you had a problem I would look into where you bought it and their distributor.TOTW is a better food then Wellness (unless you are considering Wellness CORE which is grain free). A grain free food is better then grain inclusive, although a grain inclusive food that doesn’t contain corn, wheat & soy is a LOT better then one that does.I feed both the dry TOTW and the canned.****Taste of the Wild did their own recall a while back, not because of anything bad concerning the food but becasue there may have been another meat protein source in the Pacific Salmon manufactured at one of theri plants. While this would not usually be a problem in a dog with no allergies it could be if a dog was allergic to the other protein source.*******
My Oscars keep attacking my arowana in my 30- gallon tank and my tank water smells sort of bad?
Q: ive had my silver arowana in the tank the longest because it was the first fish in there. then i added 2 blood parrots which got along with my arowana then i got 3 tiger oscars, a black one, an albino one, and a red one. they got a along with the silver arowana for a few days and then they started attacking my arowana. everytime my aro would be swimming back and fourth at the top, one of my oscars would quicky swim up and take a bite at it. now its scales are coming off, fins are bitten off a bit, and is sometimes staying at the bottom. theres a lot of decorations in the tank, live plants, caves, rocks etc. my arowana is 1ft and the oscars are all about 6-9inches. i dont know why they keep attacking my arowana please help! Next, my tank water has a strong odor when you take a sniff at it. if the lid stays open my room has a bad smell to it within a few hours. im using 2 fluval fx-5 cansister systems for my filtration and 1 undergravel filter. i do water changes every 2 weeks (30%) with a siphon, then i also use a gravel vac to suck up left over debre every other week that i dont do water changes, but the water still smells after the water change and gravel vacs (btw i dont have gravel on the bottom, i have sand & no not from the ocean, its bought from the locel pet store). i clean 1 of my fluval filters once a month every month, the nthe next month i clean the other so its rotated monthly. all the fish that i have in the tank are (freshwater): 1 silver arowana, 3 tiger oscars, 2 blood parrots, 2 green spotted puffers, 1 large pleco (10in), 2 smaller plecos (4in), 4 green cory’s, & 1 gourami. i also have 2 power heads places on the bottom of the tank right in the very front of the tank so that theres water movement. the 2 filters are on each corner of the tank. Lastly the only chemical ive used in the tank is aquaplus for fresh tap water so whys my water smell?300 GALLON TANK NOT 30 SORRYthe undergravel filter sucks up my sand and other debrees then goes through a filtration thingy which has carbon and all that other good stuff then the gets dumped back into the water. sand gets back in the water too but not fish waste.
A: You have 2 fluval fx-5 in a 30g tank?? it’s not a type O for a 300G is it??? if not Sell one of the fx5 and get a bigger tank, your arowana needs a 150g min alone!!! you need to cut down on the number of fish in your tank big time.
My Oscars keep attacking my arowana in my 300 gallon tank and my tank water smells sort of bad? POST #2?
Q: DAMN PEOPLE ITS A TYPO ITS A #)) GALLON NOT A “30-” GALLON. WHO THE HELL WOULD HAVE 2 FLUVAL fx5’s in a 30 GALLON TANK. A: i can totally relate to your question on a 140 gallon scale. i have had all these issues with the cichlid spieces and the “tank stank”.i just solved the smelly water thing with help from this community.as for the attacking oscars. the general rule of thumb in this hobbi and dealing with the cichlid spieces is everytime you mix cichlids like these your taking a chance of non tollerence. it sucks and soon im sure ill have to remove my red terror form my aquarium because my pike likes whooping on it. and soon my jaguar cichlid will be big enough to cause chaos too.sound like youll have to choose soon who you like more…in a 300 it would be fun to grow peacock bass. i have 3 of these but will soon need to sell them for my tank is only 16″ wide.hits all hit and mix mixing those spieces, they are either going to get along or not.how big are these oscars?maybe start out with some that are just big enough to NOT fit into the arowannas mouth.then your blood parrots will aniolate anything smaller than them most likely…lol… thats how it is.this is what i did to stock aggressive fish.i studied the spieces that i thought i wanted to get, then i bought them all at once(or as many as i could).i got my pike 6″, jaguar 3″, snook 5″.my pike tore the jag up in a 30 gallon for holding.i put the jag into the 140 first for a few days to get comfertable with the red terror. they both established themselfs without any aggresstion.then i entroduced the pike. even though there is aggresstion and the pike raigns suprem they all co- exsist without ripping each other apart(for now).hit and miss with the cichlids!anyway, the water stink! i have a sump but had the same stink. I KNOW ABOUT THE STINK. i just now got rid of it with the help of this community. i run an average of 700- 900 gallons per hour through my system with a 30 gallon sump.i removed all my carbon(i had a lot because i thought this would solve my smell issue), replaced it with more filter media. my whole sump now is full of media. there is not 1 inch(besides the space right underneth where the “bioballs” are) that does not have filter media of some sort.within my fiter system i added air lines through out the media. you wont be able to do this in a canister i dont think. this reduces the chance of arobic build up through out my system and replaces any sitting stinky bubbles with fresh air.i dont like undergravel filters.no carbon! i change 40 to %50 of water each week with gravel vac to at least the surface of substrate to vac the poo up. and do i have poo. my fish have turds the size of a small cat!i have sand too. its mixed in with 3 other kinds of substrate.with these tips i was able to knock the stink out almost instantly.good luck
