does anyone know what these symptoms mean? Abdominal pain, nausea, etc.?
Q: I’m a fourteen year old female and recently I’ve been experiencing pain in the lower left quadrant of my abdomen as well as a fever, weakness/fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite and loss of weight. At first I thought it might be appendicitis but realised shortly after that my appendix is on the right half of my body(silly me). still, I’m really worried that something is wrong. The pain in my abdomen is a kind of shooting, stabbing pain and it subsides and reoccurs regularly. Does anyone know what this is and what I should do about it? Please, I’m really concerned and would like help immediatly.
A: More then likely this is an intestinal problem. Since your losing weight. I would say you definitely need to be seen by a doctor. You may have some treatable problem if caught in the early stage. However, if you are not seen and you let it advance it will be harder to treat,.
On/off nausea for 3 weeks without other symptoms?
Q: My younger brother just turned 14 and has been experiencing off/on nausea for about 3 weeks. There are no other symptoms. No fever, no vomiting, no diarrhea, no aches/pains, no fatigue… nothing. He had a tick bite maybe a month ago but was tested for Lyme Disease; that came back negative. The day the nausea started he had a migraine. The nausea is at the worst when he first wakes up and before he goes to bed. It seems to get a bit worse after he eats. But it also occurs off/on throughout the day. It doesn’t wake him from his sleep. He has seen 2 different pediatricians and we’ve made an appointment to see a gastroenterologist, but it isn’t for another week. I had thought he might be faking, but what kid fakes nausea for 3 weeks, doesn’t eat because of this fake nausea, and manages to get his face to be as pale as a ghost? The doctors have no idea, and neither do we. Any suggestions?
A: Since you know he had a tick bite, it certainly suggests Lyme or other tick-borne infection. (Ticks carry other nasty stuff besides Lyme.) Be advised that the lab test they probably gave your brother (known as an ELISA test) has a very high false-negative rate. Meaning it often says you don’t have it, when you actually do.Good sources of info about Lyme disease:http://www.lymedisease.orghttp://www.ilads.orghttp://www.canlyme.comhttp://www.lymenet.orghttp://www.lymeinfo.nethttp://www.lymediseaseassociation.orghttp://www.lymedoctor.comFor info about the gastrointestinal manifestations of Lyme, see the following website: http://www.lymenet.de/literatur/vtsherr_gut.htm
