The big thing about bergamot oil, which is used to flavor the tea, is it’s smell (of course… he he) – so I guess based on what a person takes into their nose their mood can change: “Earl Grey Tea as an Antidepressant Bergamot, the ke…

Earl Grey Faux pas?
Q: I knew that Earl Grey tea is supposed to be flavoured with “bergamot” (because the package says so), but I had no idea what bergamot was. Anyway, it’s described as “citrus” so I figured, no milk, but after the first sip, I decided it was quite strong, and so I added milk and it was just right. Several days and a dozen cups of tea later, I looked up what this bergamot was, and it’s a type of orange, and so I searched for Earl Grey + milk and found a web site where it says that’s taboo! Okay, but it tastes good, and I know this guy who swears by milk in his lemon-scented tea (no actual lemons in it, but like Earl Grey, has the scent of the fruit’s peel). Is there really a proscription against milk in Earl Grey? Or is that just one pedant who can html?
A: I figure that if I buy the tea, I will put in it what I want. I too like milk in tea (yes, even Earl Grey).
What type of tea is the best for you?
Q: I’ve heard green tea is very good, and I drink Tetley and Earl Grey on a daily basis- any more suggestions?
A: In regards to health benefits, Green Tea has the most proven results (with scientific study) that benefit your health. Especially regarding dieting. Of course it’s no miracle cure or anything, but any little bit helps right? I actually take green tea supplements and it helps a little bit with weight loss (keep in mind it’s very subtle and you will still need to workout and diet) and I feel more energetic in the day..which is probably why it helps in weight loss.As for drinking tea. It depends on your budget. The best of course comes from specialty tea shops that you buy by weight, Then whole foods type stores, then of course just regular grocery stores (or asian grocery stores). Really it depends on your budget and how important tea is to you. If you’re like my Dad and just drink black tea 5 times a day, he just drinks cheap stuff all the time (like lipton bags from safeway) and then when he’s with his family or friends he whips out the expensive stuff from Hong Kong. As for myself I don’t drink tea too often, and I like all varieties. So I buy the expensive stuff from specialty tea shops and I make it more of a treat rather than a daily drink. Of course I have nothing against drinking cheap black tea at Dim Sum or cheap green tea with my Sushi.~G
High quality, delicious teas available in US grocery stores?
Q: Hi, I was just asking for suggestions on some good tasting teas that are available in most US grocery stores. Please don’t suggest crap teas like Lipton — those are for noobs. I like to drink black teas like Tetley British Blend, Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Loose Tea, and Twinings Earl Grey Loose Tea, but I want to start trying some green tea as well. Could you please suggest some good black and green teas to me and also tell me if green tea tastes good and what exactly it tastes like? Please tell me the exact brand as well, not just the flavor. Thank you.
A: Wow. You’re as much of a tea-snob as I am! Nice to meet you. Ok, maybe we’re connoisseurs, but ‘snob’ is a whale of a lot easier to spell…St Dalfour has a good line of various black teas. Good Earth has some lovely spiced teas, some black and some herbal. Trader Joe’s has some excellent black teas as well, including the only Assam tea I can find around here. Trader Joe’s is a chain of supermarkets. You can use Google to find their store locator to see if there’s one anywhere near you. Assam is a full-bodied black tea that isn’t bitter at all. It’s a fuller, rounder taste than a Ceylon tea, but just as smooth. My alltime favorite, of course, is Ceylon-Assam, but that’s darned hard to find in this country!Personally, I do not like green tea. Some folks do. They can have it, too — more black tea for me! The taste wasn’t full enough for me, even when I let it steep half-past-forever.
