Q: What’s wrong with me? I couldn’t breathe. It felt like two giant hands were coming down on my throat. Gasping for air I tried to grab hold of anything…anything to help me… and then everything went black. A sharp scream escaped my throat and my eyes opened with great relief as I looked around my bedroom. The lights were off but I could still see my alabaster curtains flutter slightly in the brilliant moonlight coming through the window. My window was open and a light breeze hit me and made me aware that I was sweating. Suddenly, my door flew open-making me jump-and my mother ran in. “What happened!?” she gasped.“It was just a nightmare,” I told her. “I’m fine, mom. Go back to sleep.” I said as I looked at her face. She looked worn out, with dark circles under her eyes.“Well, okay…if you’re sure…”she hesitated. Typical mom.“Yeah, I’m fine,” I assured her.“Goodnight sweetie.”“Night, mom.” She hesitantly walked back to her room.Still out of breath from the dream, I tried to go to sleep. It was hard, but I concentrated on not thinking about my nightmare, and soon fell into a dreamless trance. This was practically a nightly routine. I wake up from a nightmare, screaming, my mom runs in, and I tell her “I’m fine”. No big deal. But this dream wasn’t like the others. In this one, everything was the same except for one thing: I saw the face of a boy. Well, I shouldn’t say boy. He looked like he was around my age, with messy, jet-black hair that went past his ears, unforgettable piercing green eyes, tan skin, and a smile that made your heart jump to your throat.I was awakened that morning by the smell of bacon and eggs frying downstairs. I opened my eyes and the bright sunlight flooded through my window, almost blinding me. Mom must have opened the curtains for me. I took a shower, brushed my teeth, picked out an outfit, just some sweats and a tee-shirt, pulled a brush through my auburn hair and went downstairs to eat before school.“Rise and shine sleepy head!” mom said.“Hey, mom. Can I have some eggs?” I asked tiredly.“You can get them yourself,” she said. I groaned, and looked at her with my puppy-dog face. It only took about five seconds for it to work. She sighed, walked over to the eggs, and put some on a plate for me.I ate them with no problem considering how starving I was. “Well, I’m off to school,” I said.“Okay. Have a good day sweetie!”“Thanks, mom.”Walking out into the hall towards the door I looked in the mirror in the entryway to make sure I didn’t have any food in my teeth. Instead of my face in the mirror, it was the green eyed and black haired boy, staring back at me. Then, he disappeared. My jaw dropped as I looked back at my own reflection. I closed my mouth and shook my head. It’s nothing, Carson, you’re hallucinating. There is no other face in that mirror but yours. I tried to assure myself. I turned around and dragged my feet down the hall, walked out the door, down the marble steps of my house, and onto the street towards school. I couldn’t clear my head of the feeling that that “hallucination” was real out of my head.I shook my head slightly as if to shake the thought right out my ears.“Carson!” Somebody yelled from behind me.I whirled around to see my best friend jogging towards me.“Hey Tristan,” I said sluggishly.“What’s wrong with you? You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” he said.“Almost,” I said under my breath so Tristan couldn’t hear.“What’s that?”“Nothing, I’m fine. Just a little bit tired, that’s all,” I said quickly as if to reassure him.“Well, okay,” he said, sounding a little bit wary. Tristan has been my best friend since as long as I can remember. We had met back in 3rd grade and now, being juniors in high school, it seems like forever. He isn’t one of those give-you-a-bullcrap-answer-just-to-make-you-feel-better kind of person. When you ask him for an honest and sincere answer, that’s just what he gives you. He is very straightforward about it. Tristan has jet-black hair and big blue eyes. He wears glasses when he is at home and contacts for school. He’s always there when I need him. When I am in a dreadful mood and just need someone to talk to, he is there for me. I can’t even remember a time when he wasn’t.“If you’re sure…” he said, sounding very concerned.I nodded and we kept walking towards school.RIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGG!“Shoot! There’s the warning bell,” I said as I started to run. When I got into school I ran to my first class and Tristan went to his. I was about 5 minutes late to class, so I walked in as Mr. Stelloway, my impatient chemistry teacher, was starting.“If you will all get your books out… ah, Miss Voyens. Nice of you to join us. Take a seat and get your textbook out.” I walked over to an empty seat near the window and got my book and a pencil out. Mr. Stelloway started his lecture. I tried to take notes and that’s when something caught my eye. Outside the window I was sitting alongside, ocarson is a girl, and so am i…just so you know. and it’s not finished. i have more, but it wouldn’t all fit. if you want me to email it to you, i will as long as you give me your email! and thanks so much you guys! i’m glad you enjoyed it! i wanna publish it if it’s possible. again, thanks!
