A: The “average” male, ie one who is 34.4 years old, 5′ 9 1/2″ tall, and weighs 175 lbs, can bench press 158 lbs once. You may have seen people quote 135 as the average one rep max, but that’s across ALL age groups. This all comes from Men’s Health magazine. I personally feel that MOST men don’t bench press at all. Ever. Even people who belong to a gym rarely go. I bet if you took a totally random sample off the street and asked them to do a one rep max you’d find the average was signifigantly lower than 158.And I’m a power lifter. I bench 345 with a pause, 360 touch and go.
What is the average male Bench press max??
Q:
A: The average male doesn’t bench press at all. So that brings the statistic WAY down.Casual observation at my gym would suggest that the average males who bench press there, bench about 90 to 200 pounds. Allegedly you should be able to bench your own weight. That gives a big incentive to lose the extra fat! I never bench because I have shoulder issues causing problems if I get the bar down to my chest. My susbstitue is doing dumbbell chest presses while laying back on a Swiss Ball. I am currently doing 3 sets of 7 reps with an 80 pound bell in each hand. The advantages for me in laying on a Swiss Ball is that I have to balance which strengthens my core muscles, and, having the Swiss Ball between my shoulders keeps my arms from going back any farther than is comfortable. So it is preventing me from reinjuring my shoulders. So I guess my current bench equivalent would be about 160. Though because of the extra balance needed by having a seperate weight in each hand instead of the stability given by the bar, and the instability of the Swiss Ball, the equivalent bench press is probably somewhat higher. Guys who bench press using a Smith Machine need no stability at all. A Smith Machine doesn’t give you nearly the muscular development that dumbbells do. When you have to stabilize seperate weights in all planes of motion you are calling far more muscles into play. The guys who use a Smith Machine aren’t using nearly as many muscles and will not grow as fast.
