Q: I run at least a mile every other day and walk at a fast pace for another 1.5 to 2 miles. How long would it take to walk from Seattle, WA, to Sacramento, CA? ?
Q: The average healthy person can walk 4 miles an hour.Let’s say they walk for 8 hours a day.Let’s say the distance is about 800 miles. How many days would they travel?
A: In the time it took to type in this question you could have solved it yourself. 8 hrs at 4 mph = 32 mi/day. 800 mi divided by 32 = 25 days. Of course, that assumes 8 hrs of actual walking time per day (stops for rest, meals, etc don’t count) and you walk that far every day.
How many (average) miles can a person travel a day on foot?? =)?
Q: Hi! I’m desperate!!! I’m trying to write a fantasy book, but I’m not having any luck finding an answer to this question!! I’ve learned that a person can travel about 26 miles a day on horseback, and that a good day’s walk at a slow pace is around 10 miles- but what I can’t figure out is how many miles can a person cover in a day if they’re really in a hurry. My one character is an experienced traveler, but the other one is only moderately experienced. Does anyone have any idea how much distance (miles) these two could cover a day if they were being pursued? I also realize that terrain is a huge factor- and most the landscape in my book is kind of rough (though not extremely). If you could answer this question- I would be forever in your debt!!!! Thanks so much!!! = )
A: The average person walks 3mph on flat easy ground. On rough terrains it would be less. If the person was walking for 12 hours on easy ground, you can do that math and say 36 miles. If the person was more experienced I’d give them closer to 3.5 miles per hours which would be a brisk speed. A good estimate since you have an experienced traveler and a not so experienced traveler would be around 40 miles for 12 hours assuming the experienced traveler is helping to encourage the less experienced traveler to keep pace.As far as a horse only being able to ride 26 miles.. I’d say that estimate isn’t right. At a nice trot a horse can go about 8 mph if its on easy ground, less if its rough terrain with broken dirt. So more like 4 or 5 mph. But still yet a horse can ride at a trot for an extended period of time. All day even if you lucky. So a horse could potentially go 100 miles in a single day on easy terrain. More like 50 miles on rougher terrain. Double that if you don’t care if the horse survived or not. Other factors would include as stated the terrain, food resources, drinking resources, humidity, ect.
