Does a “flexible” points-based immigration system mean we add up your points and let you in anyway? (UK)?
Q: With current immigration, how can they sign up to the Copenhagen Protocol which means that rich countries pay poorer nations cold, hard cash for their climatic “debt” ie, emissions…what do they think will happen to our emissions if they escalate the population? If a substantial proportion of the new population is third world origin then why do we owe money to these countries if it’s their people making up the difference and the population density/environmental pressures?New World Order?
A: The points based system allows the Government to raise or lower the bar for immigration. For instance at the moment you cannot get a Tier 1 work visa unless you have a minimum of a Masters degree and can prove equivalent earnings of £20,000 pa.For a Tier 2 Sponsored visa, unless you are qualified and skilled in one of the shortage occupations such as maths and science teachers, critical care and theatre nurses, vets, medical consultants and certain engineering posts, you must also pass a points assessment taking into account your qualifications, age, earning capacity, English language skills etc.Tier 3, Low Skilled Workers category is suspended infinitely.Tier 4 Students can work 20 hours per week during term time and full time during holidays.Tier 5 Temporary workers covers the Youth Mobility Scheme, a reciprocal, one-time only, two year work visa for young Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders. Also under this tier is charity workers, sportspeople, entertainers and religious ministers.Other people allowed to work are people who are granted entry as a dependent of Tier 1, 2 and 4 visa holders; spouses of UK citizens or those who have Indefinite Leave to Remain, and; dependents of EAA nationals who have exercised their Treaty rights to live and work in the UK. Those granted asylum are also allowed to work.So it’s not the PBS that’s causing the problem. The PBS is regulating the numbers and calibre of people applying to work and study in the UK, but it has no bearing on the right to work of all the other groups not covered by the system. As for the environmental reasons. We in the west have very little manufacturing output as labour costs have driven these industries out of our countries and into the developing nations. Developing nations rely on manufacturing output and this causes high carbon emissions. We cannot prevent them developing their industries by enforcing the same carbon emission quotas on them, which in any case we need as we do not produce goods ourselves, so to balance the cost of them reducing emissions, we pay.
