Your Home’s Foyer: 11 DIY Ideas to Make an Entrance

Your home’s foyer is a small space with a big job. It’s the family’s way station for coming and going, and the first impression of your home for guests. To make your home’s foyer a high-functioning, low-maintenance entrance room that is guest ready, try these 11 DIY decorating ideas.

Draw Them in With Paint Color

Choose a warm, neutral paint color that welcomes family and friends into your home. The foyer is the transition room from outdoors to indoors, and the paint color can determine if people want to come in or run away.

Add a Night Light

Place a motion detecting night light in the foyer so you can avoid fumbling around in the dark for the light switch. A night light that only turns on when it detects motion is eco-friendly and saves you money.

Get Off on the Right Foot

Stop messes in their tracks with durable dirt-trapping rug in the foyer. Chose a low pile rug with a pattern design to hide stains. Use a non-skid pad under the rug to prevent from moving around.

Treasure Chest

If the foyer is large enough, re-purpose a chest of drawers by placing them in the foyer as a treasure chest. The chest of drawers will provide the flat surface top needed to set things on while the drawers provide hidden storage for all the ‘treasures’ that need to be kept near the front door.

Baskets, Baskets and One More Basket

Use decorative baskets to corral all the items that collect in the foyer. A basket for incoming mail (make it a small basket so mail does not pile up for days), a basket for out-going items and a recycle/waste basket.

Key Holder

Place a small decorative holder on top of the chest of drawers (or console table) and designate it for keys only. No more wasted time searching for lost keys.

Rain Check

Purchase a large sheet pan (kitchenware department) and place it on the floor in one corner to hold rain boots and umbrellas. The sheet pan will catch all drips and mud, and is easily cleaned. An inexpensive sheet pan can be spray painted to match any décor.

Seat Yourself

Provide some type of seating in the foyer so you will have a place to sit to take off shoes, read mail or wait on slow-poke family members to finish getting ready.

Flower Power

Placing a live plant or having a fresh floral arrangement in the foyer to see upon your return home will make you smile and lift mood.

Window Dressing

If the foyer (or front door) has a window, keep the window dressing simple. Something low maintenance that lets the natural sunlight in is welcoming.

Front Door Interest

Make your front door interesting and exciting by painting it a bold color. A bold red, blue or green will make visitors interested to see what’s on the other side of the door.
