Why Set Killed His Elder Brother?

Set was known as the dangerous and unpredictable god. The ancient Egyptians described him as being a dangerous infant. According to one myth, Set ripped himself from his mother because he couldn’t wait to be born.

As many of you know, it was a tradition to become the future ruler of Egypt if you were royal blood. Osiris was the elder child and he was given the throne of Egypt when his father Geb was too old to rule Egypt. Because his father granted Osiris the throne of Egypt, Set was not too happy about it. Not to mention the ancient Egyptians loved Osiris more than Set.

One afternoon, Osiris told his wife that he needed to travel around the world, and leave Egypt for a few days. Osiris left his wife in charge instead of asking his brother, Set. This made set furious. He decided to get rid of his brother and take the throne of Egypt.

When Osiris went back to Egypt, his brother Set welcome him with a big party. During the party, Set told that guests about a beautiful carved chest he had made. Set told the guests that the chest would be given to whichever guest would fit inside. The guests didn’t know that the chest was made to fit Osiris only. When it was the turn of Osiris to get inside the chest, Set ordered his followers to nailed the lid shut. When nobody was looking, Set took the chest with him and threw it into the Nile.

When Set found out that Osiris wife was looking for his brother, he went back into the Nile River to look for the chest. When he found it, he opened it and cut the corpse of the drowned Osiris into tiny pieces, spreading the parts of his brother all over Egypt because he knew that his wife had the power to put his body back together.
