Gangs and Hip Hop music has always been affiliated in conversations about both. Some people believe that Rap has spawned the gang violence over the decades. Some people believe that gang activity influences many Hip Hop artists. There are a few popular artists who admit to being in a gang, but the majority aren’t affiliated with any street gang. Some of the most popular artists come out and state what exact gang they represent, like The Game and Snoop Dogg.
A lot of the violent crimes that happen in the big cities are usually blamed on gang activity. The most significant gangs exist in large cities and usually include people of minority backgrounds. The Rap industry mostly includes musicians that are in a minority ethnic background. Gang members dress in the same fashion as many of the prolific Hip Hop musicians. Hip Hop has produced many songs that are considered violent. So, is it true that Hip Hop is responsible for violent gang activity?
Gangs have existed far longer than Rap music. Doesn’t this prove the fact that Hip Hop is responsible for the creation of street gangs? Some people will argue that Rap music have evolved gangs into something even more violent than before. I don’t believe that music is powerful enough to make somebody perform violent actions. With that said, I do believe that gangs have an influence on what some Hip Hop musicians say.
Many of the popular musicians today grew up in the inner city. As long as they have been alive, they have been effected by gangs in some way or another. Hip Hop is the only music genre where musicians really come out and tell the fans what they think. Of course their music is going to sound violent if that is what they all grew up around. Rap has always been a scapegoat when gang activity springs up. In reality, Hip Hop has nothing to do with what goes on in the streets. Lyrics can get violent but it is always just an expression of emotion. This blame that the music industry always receives is not deserved at all. Call Of Duty displays war scenes and violent acts in the video games. So, why isn’t Call of Duty blamed for every war? Hopefully, that analogy opened your eyes and made you realize that Rap music gets a bad wrap for no reason.
