What Do Angelina Jolie and the Olsen Twins Have in Common?

When you think of Angelina Jolie and twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the unlikely trio seems to share little beside their celebrity status. But the mother of six who saves the world between movies and the petite TV twins-turned-fashion-titans have something else in common — they almost always smile with their mouth closed..

With thousands of dollars to spend on teeth so perfect and pearly white you could see your reflection in them, chances are good these wealthy women are not hiding coffee-stained canines or unsightly incisors. So why do they refuse to flash toothy smiles like Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway?

Even at their most recent public appearances — the Olsens at New York’s Fashion Week and Jolie handcuffed to a Louis Vuitton purse at the Toronto International Film Festival — their teeth were MIA.

Here are some possible explanations:

Closed-Mouth Smiles Make Them Seem More Mysterious

Part of maintaining one’s cachet as a celebrity is to seem superior to mere mortals. The domestic partner of Brad Pitt was once dubbed a “modern-day Mona Lisa” by a fashion blogger who likened the “Lara Croft” star to the mysterious portrait subject famous for her enigmatic smile.

Retaining an air of mystery increases one’s celebrity quotient. Pop star Lady Gaga revealed to a reporter that celebrities should be careful not to be seen doing ordinary things, like taking out the trash. “I would rather die than have my fans not see me in a pair of high heels. I would never give up my wigs and hats for anything,” she said.

What could be more common than saying “cheese” for the camera?

Closed-Mouth Smiles Make Them Seem More Serious

The “Full House” twins and “Salt” star achieved their fame as TV and movie actresses, but they may not want to be perceived as just sweet or sexy starlets. Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen have used their fame and fashion flair to create their own multi-million dollar clothing business, including their high-end fashion label, The Row.

Jolie, meanwhile, has become a global citizen, adopting children from different continents and shining the spotlight on poverty and injustice throughout the world as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. A toothpaste commercial smile could undercut her gravitas.

They May Be Hiding Something

According to a body language expert, closed-lip smiles are often forced, indicating the smiler is just being “polite.” In contrast, a whole-faced smile with teeth showing reveals “honesty and openness to communication.”

The Olsens and Jolie may wish to hide their true feelings because they feel fans have stolen enough of their privacy. By keeping their teeth hidden, they could be holding back part of themselves from the public and paparazzi.
