Warrior – the Movie

The movie “Warrior”, released September 9th through-out the Phoenix area, is a gutsy and realistic fight movie with the intensity of the Rocky series, staring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte. This gritty story takes an honest and intense look at guilt, pain, alienation and reconciliation while carrying some very heartwarming themes of forgiveness and redemption in the face of family estrangement.

Nolte worked perfect as the struggling alcoholic who is making progress in his fight against the demon drink, while trying desperately to repair the huge wake of damage his drunkenness and rage has caused in his family through-out the years.

While this fight movie is set in the context of the dangerous world of mixed martial arts, the dramatic fight scenes provide the perfect backdrop for several other fights for survival. The movie depicts the fight a dad has, to overcome the weaknesses and failures of his past; the fight a son has, to save his family from financial shipwreck; and the fight a brother has to mask his pain from a series of wounding events and wrong choices.

While the script was wisely written in a way so as not to “preach” in any kind of overt way, yet the themes of hope, help and forgiveness come across loud and clear. A Biblical discussion guide is even being given to those who see the movie that can be used for ministry or personal study.

While the language is a bit harsh and all to realistic, this writer would definitely give this film a “thumbs way up” for a movie that is well made, entertaining, and thought provoking, and that carries the theme that relationship reconciliation is worth fighting for.
