Top Ten Robert Redford Movies

What is the deal with Robert Redford? Why did so many women flock to watch his movies? Was it his blonde hair and blue eyes or the artfully crafted roles he starred in? You decide. Here are ten of Robert Redford’s best movies.

1. Barefoot in the Park (1967). This Robert Redford film is one of my favorites. Robert Redford stars with Jane Fonda as two newlyweds who move into a tiny, very tiny New York apartment as their first home together. It’s actually quite comical how small the place is, almost unbelievably so! The comedy never ceases as we see different ways for things to go wrong when you’re living in such close quarters with someone. This Robert Redford classic reminds us of the days when we first got started on our own.

2. Indecent Proposal (1993). Indecent Proposal is another well known film starring Robert Redford. Imagine having a dream and going to Vegas to try and win enough money to make it happen. Well, this is exactly what Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson’s characters, Diana and David, decide to do. A happily married couple, they travel to Las Vegas to win big. Things don’t go as well as seemed, and they end up losing everything. At least, to them they feel as if they have lost everything. The plot thickens as Billionaire Gage, played by Robert Redford, decides to make a proposal to David that he will give him one million dollars to spend one night with his wife. The interesting theme is that even though they had lost all of their money, they still had each other. If David accepts the proposal and Diana goes through with it, then they really have lost it all. Watch the movie to see what unfolds!

3. The Sting (1973). Imagine two con men working on a huge con. The con sure isn’t a small one, as they plan to con a mob boss! This very famous classic Robert Redford film also stars Paul Newman as the fellow con man. Robert Redford’s character Johnny Hooker teams up with Paul Newman’s character Henry Gondorff as Gondorff is an old pro at the con. Hooker decides to con the mob boss because he has killed his loyal friend.

4. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). If you’re looking for a great classic Western, you’ve found your film! Paul Newman costars in this film with Robert Redford as the two team up for some great robberies. Things don’t go as planned, and they end up with a six man team chasing them for the kill. The team was put together by the Union Pacific after the pair robbed them, and they won’t stop until both robbers are dead. The only option is to leave the country, so they head for Bolivia with Sundance Kid’s (Robert Redford’s) girl. This way, they can start robbing people there. They think they are safe, but they best think again! Watch what happens once they get to Bolivia!

5. The Way We Were (1973). Sometimes, opposites attract. This is clear when Robert Redford’s character Hubbell meets Barbra Streisand’s character Katie. He’s a writer with no particular convictions, and she’s got every opinion in the book. At first, the two find these opposites intriguing. They end up getting married! However, their differences become apparent at some point and start causing tension. A divorce seems imminent. What is meaningful to me about this movie is how it portrays an all too familiar situation with couples, where things end that really were strong. It becomes evident that even though they were different, their love for each other was powerful enough to make them each the better for the other. But is this enough to keep them together? Will they realize this before it’s too late?

6. The Natural (1984). Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs, a simple farm boy who wants to make it big in the big leagues as a baseball player. Unfortunately, as soon as he leaves home and sets out to pursue his dream, he makes the mistake of stopping for a rendezvous in a hotel with an alluring female. He ends up getting shot, thus ruining his chances at his dream. Sixteen years later, he gets another chance. He’s a rookie at 35 in the bush leagues. Women seek to distract him again! Will he let them sidetrack him, or will he finally make his dream come true?

7. Out of Africa (1985). Meryl Streep teams up with Robert Redford in this romantic classic movie. Meryl Streep’s character Karen decides to enter into a marriage of convenience. She ends up moving with her husband to Africa. The marriage isn’t what she thought, as her husband continues to cheat on her and doesn’t open the dairy farm she was promised. To make matters worse, she contracts deadly syphilis from her husband and has to return to Denmark for treatment. Upon her return, her marriage ends. She falls for Robert Redford’s character Denys a big game hunter. However, he just can’t be tamed, and it begins to cause them problems. What will become of the two of them?

8. Up Close and Personal (1996). Michelle Pfeiffer is a news reporter who needs help! She’s just getting her start in the business. Enter Robert Redford, a news director who seems to know just what she needs to do to make it. Something must work, because her career takes off. The bad news is, that her career takes her far away from Robert Redford. The news gets even worse when she’s taken hostage in a prison riot she was assigned to cover. Will the two reunite, and if so, will they be able to stay together?

9. Legal Eagles (1986). Robert Redford and Debra Winger are both attorneys. Winger plays the part of Laura Kelly, who has her own private law office. Robert Redford stars as Tom Logan who is an assistant district attorney. Laura is the attorney for Chelsea (played by Daryl Hannah). Chelsea is accused of stealing a painting that she says was given to her by her father. Logan helps Kelly with the case, meanwhile becoming attracted to Chelsea and confusing everything. What’s more important in a woman: luscious blonde hair and long legs, or a good mind and grounded personality? Watch to find out whether he ends up falling for Debra Winger’s character Kelly or Daryl Hannah’s character Chelsea.

10. The Great Gatsby (1974). F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote his classic novel in 1925 and it was made into a film three times. Was the third time a charm when Robert Redford starred as the main character, the rich self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby? Gatsby is trying to get back his old flame, even though she is married. Will he get her back? And at what cost?
