TLC’s Sister Wives: Running from the Heat, Again

When the heat from local law enforcement became too much for the Brown Family of TLC’s Sister Wives they loaded up their polygamist family into assorted vehicles and ran off for Las Vegas. When the heat from Las Vegas temperatures became too much for them, the Browns did what they are best at…running away. This time they headed for Big Bear Lake in California for a weekend of camping.

This theme of pretending that problems don’t exist persisted throughout the most recent episode of Sister Wives, which aired on October 30, 2011.

One of the perks of the lifestyle. The show opened with Christina’s daughter, Ysabel and Robyn’s daughter, Breanna, moving in with Sister Wife Meri and her daughter, Mariah. Robyn and her daughter didn’t seem to be having any problems but Christina and Ysabel had been butting heads recently. Christine implied that Sister Wife Meri might be a better match for Breanna than she was. Robyn called this “one of the perks of the lifestyle”. Finally, what we’ve all been thinking…what a great way to pass your kids off onto someone else.

Sister Wives (and Kody) run from the Heat. This episode of Sister Wives was filmed on the Fourth of July when temperatures in Las Vegas are ridiculously high. Rather than staying put and dealing with the problem that was facing them, the Browns stuck with their MO of running away and having a party to hide the fact that temperatures were rising inside and outside their homes.

Kody says “Teenagers are Angry for No Reason”. If you’ve watched the last few episodes, you’ve seen the attitudes of the teenagers steadily worsen and anger has increased. I think this is understandable. Their father brings home a new wife and her kids, then the kids are forced to leave their friends and family and head off to Las Vegas. I’d dare say that the kids were never consulted about the parents’ decision to televise their polygamist lifestyle, either. It’s no wonder the kids are angry. Their feelings and opinions have been ignored. I’m not saying that the kids should dictate what happens, but viewers have not seen any examples of the Sister Wives acknowledging the legitimacy of their kids’ emotions. Instead, the kids are told that they have to suck it up for the family. Sorry, Kody, but those kids have plenty of reason to be angry…at you.

Kody shows more concern for his sports car than his son. The Sister Wives acknowledge that Hunter, Janelle and Kody’s son, is having a particularly difficult time with the move to Las Vegas. Kody discounts Hunter’s anger by basically calling him a hormone crazed teenager.

On the way to their camp site, The Sister Wives discover high water across the roadway. Kody spent more time being concerned about whether his sports car, which he acknowledged as his “fifth wife”, would be able to get across the water safely. In response to the suggestion that he leave his “fifth wife” behind, he refused because he didn’t want it to be vandalized. Assorted vehicles and family members crossed the stream and another long day in the world of The Sister Wives finally came to an end around the campfire.

Sister Wives Confront Bullies in their Own Family and Robyn wonders if her kids might choose to live with their biological dad. On their way into a pizza restaurant one of the older boys (there are so many I can’t always keep them straight) poked Breanna, Robyn’s daughter, in the eye. Sister Wife Meri lectured the kids outside the restaurant and asked for support from the other moms. Her request was met with silence. Later, during couch time discussions, Christine and Meri disagreed about whether Meri’s actions were appropriate. Robyn lamented the fact that her kids had not yet blended successfully with the children of her Sister Wives and suggested that they might choose to live with her ex-husband when they are old enough to make that choice.

It was an action packed thirty minutes of polygamist TV.
