Tips for Dinner Parties

When you first decide to start entertaining guests, it can be a bit intimidating. Use these tips to help you along.

Deciding What To Serve:

Choose some of your favorite recipes that you are comfortable making and confident in your technique.

If you want to try a new recipe, try it before the party. Technique is not something that comes naturally.

Make appetizers that can be made ahead of time. You do not want to have to rush through them.

Make sure you have enough oven room to keep appetizers warm and keep your plates warm. This is the best way to ensure that your food stays warm while the guests enjoy it.

Choose a balance of rich foods with light items. Also choose a variety of colors, flavors, temperatures and textures.

Plan appetizers from many categories. Choose from poultry, meat, fish, seafood, cheese and vegetables.

Beverages:

Allow 1/2 ounces of liquor for each drink

Allow a quart of mixer for every three people.

A bottle of wine will serve four to six guests

Allow 12 ounces of beer per guest for every half hour to an hour.

Always have nonalcoholic beverages for those who cannot have alcohol or are designated drivers.

How much to serve:

For small gatherings of 8 to 10 guests, you should have four types of appetizers.

For parties of up to 45 guests, you should have six varieties.

For more than 45 guests, offer eight choices.

For cocktail parties, plan at least 12 bite size servings per person.

Remember, hot appetizers go faster.

If dinner will be served, only serve half of the recommended amount of appetizers.

Keep extra in the freezer, just in case appetizers go faster than expected. Ensure that they are ready to toss together quickly.
