The Personality of a Shih-Tzu

Just like people, dogs have all types of personalities. No matter the breed, some are naturally kind while others would try to run off with a leg or two. However, the Shih-Tzu has very special qualities. Read on to find out more about the personality of a Shih-Tzu, and consider adopting a four-legged baby with a face that would melt your heart. They are sweet little dogs with a lot of spunk, and they make fantastic family members in homes with kids and cats.

The Shih-Tzu is Very Loyal

Nobles were once the only people that owned the Shih-Tzu. They were actually bred to sit at the feet of kings and other royals, and they were used as living, breathing foot warmers. Although anyone can adopt a Shih-Tzu these days, they still have a loyal personality that is highly unique. They will love everyone in the family and lovingly accept those they come to know, but they often take to one person over all others. They will sit at their feet of their favorite person as if they were royalty, and they do this with a spark of adoration in their eyes. Their personality is true and faithful, and this person will remember their favorite person forever – even if they have not seen them for months or years.

They Love Squeaky Toys

The personality of a Shih-Tzu can be very playful. This breed of dog tends to love squeaky toys, but they all have their favorites. A Shih-Tzu might decide that a squeaky vinyl hamburger or a squeaky tennis ball is his favorite toy, and he will fiercely guard it with a throaty growl. Although he might growl and snarl, he will do this while wagging his tail. However, do not try to take his favorite possession away. His personality is trusting, but this could make him mistrust you, at least temporarily.

The Shih-Tzu Likes Has a Loving Personality

Most dogs like to cuddle, but even the most aloof Shih-Tzu will show love when his family member is down on the floor. To bring out his loving personality, lie on your stomach on the floor while supporting yourself on your elbows. Get down on his level. Chances are he will cuddle up between your arms for a little affection.

Their Personality Makes this Breed a Fantastic Watch Dog

Although the Shih-Tzu is generally friendly, some are wary of strangers. They will bark and act much bigger than they really are, but they have a good personality once they get to know someone. Best of all, they warm up fast. Their hearing is excellent, and they make fantastic little watch dogs. They will let you know when someone is nearby, and they will defend their family to the best of their ability. They live to please, and with their wonderful personality they will become a special part of the family for many years to come.
