The DREAM Act

Currently president Obama is actively trying to pass the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act is a bill to facilitate the legalization of undocumented students who came to this country as children younger than 15 and have completed high school. The bill has been rejected by congress before. However, the DREAM Act should be approved by congress because it not only benefits illegal immigrants but the country as a whole by educating the masses, strengthening our economy and rectifying the injustice to the innocent undocumented students.

The DREAM Act serves to motivate more children to get a higher education. The DREAM Act would open the doors to college for thousands of students and, would motivate them to go to get better grades to get into better colleges. As it stand now, Why try hard in high school when you cant get into college anyways, right? This act would increase the percentage of people who go to and graduate from college. A more educated population makes for a stronger nation. Furthermore a more educated population helps not only the people but the economy as well.

The DREAM Act would allow more people to go to college which would boost our own economy. “According to a recent UCLA study, students that would be impacted by the DREAM Act could add between 1.4 to 3.6 trillion in taxable income over the course of careers…” (Valencia). This is because people who graduate college make up to 60% more than those who only graduate high school. The DREAM Act would more than pay for itself over time. The only thing left to think about is “is it the right thing to do?” . The answer is yes.

The DREAM Act also serves to right the moral duty we have neglected for our students. It has already been declared by the supreme court that children who are brought here by their parents have not done anything wrong and therefore deserve the right to go to public shool. If they are allowed to go to get an elementary education the why not a higher one as well? America is a nation of immigrants, our forefathers came to this land in search of freedom and a better life. The very thing we are deneying these students. The DREAM Act is a way to protect one of the basic human right, the persuit of happiness and a better life.

The DREAM Act is a necessary addition to our system of law. This act is beneficial to everybody, the people and the nation. It serves to fix many injustices and to unite our nation at the cost of a stronger economy. The DREAM Act should be approved by congress because it not only benefits illegal immigrants but the country as a whole by educating the masses, strengthening our economy and rectifying the injustice to the inocent undocumented students.
