The 89th Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress

Although most of the Oscar hype is about the leading actors and best movies, it is the supporting roles that are often the most exciting to watch. A good mix of Hollywood heavyweights and impressive newcomers usually share the nominations for a wide range of roles.

At the 2012 ceremony, first-time nominee Octavia Spencer was announced as Best Supporting Actress. Unlike many of the jaded celebrities, it was obvious that Spencer was truly moved by this whole experience and touched to have won. She was emotional and teared up not in an actress way, but in a genuine way.

Holding the “hottest man in the room,” she thanked her family in Alabama and the state of Alabama. Being a new star, she is still close to her roots in Alabama and still has the look of someone who thinks she could wake up at any moment. After speaking for a few seconds, Octavia Spencer blurted out, “Please wrap up; I’m wrapping up; I’m freaking out; I’m sorry.” This was not a scripted acceptance speech from a composed performer. This was a blabbering mess from a woman who was truly shocked that she won.

Rather than being embarrassing or awkward, this only makes Octavia Spencer more endearing. She co-starred in The Help. This movie worked because it had a great subject, a great script, and an amazing ensemble cast. Spencer was perfect in her role in The Help, and she has been endearing and elegant in real life.

Walking up to the stage, she looked gorgeous in her shimmering dress. It was unusually modest for the Oscars, and she looked even more classically beautiful because of it. In true Hollywood grace, she held up her skirt as she walked up the stairs and looked gorgeous standing at the podium. She stood out on the stage, though, because I didn’t care about how she looked. I respected her as a person who is intelligent, talented, emotional and sincere.

The audience in the theater with her shared my emotions and she earned a standing ovation.

Her role in The Help catapulted Octavia Spencer from being unknown to holding a coveted Oscar. This woman has an incredible future in front of her and I look forward to seeing whatever movie is lucky enough to have her next.
