Soy Milk is Very Healthy, but Could Also Be Harmful for Some People

Although soy milk is becoming a popular substitute for cow’s milk as it is supposed to have a lot of nutrients, there are also other dangers of soymilk. There are two areas of concern when it comes to consuming soymilk. The first one is the non-fermented soymilk and the other is the genetically modified soy beans, and both may have undesirable side effects.

First of all, it is the fermentation process that helps prepare the soybeans while eliminating harmful bacteria as well as toxins that may cause harm when they are ingested. The biggest concern with non-fermented soymilk is the presence of high levels of phytic acid. So, when we consume non-fermented soymilk the presence of phytic acid will prevent the absorption of essential minerals and vitamins. This will lead to multiple health problems in future. The body requires adequate doses of vitamins and minerals and in the absence of these nutrients; the entire equilibrium will get affected.

The other dangers of soymilk include the fact that this phytic acid prevents the absorption of iron, which is very essential in children and women. Women lose a lot of iron due to their menstrual cycles and if they don’t get adequate amounts of iron, they could turn anemic. Children need iron for their overall growth and development. Lack of iron could disrupt their overall development.

Some of the other dangers of soymilk include the disruption of endocrine function and this is caused by the soy phytoestrogens. It can also lead to infertility in women and cause breast cancer as well. The phytic acid also stalls the absorption of iodine, which is vital mineral that is needed to maintain the metabolism in the body.
