I couldn’t be more pleased for an actor than I am for Robert Downey Jr., who is expecting a baby with Susan Downey (nee Levin) in early 2012. Downey has had his ups and downs, and we will not go into them here because it seems that finally, Robert and his wife are ready and willing to have a family. The news was related to the media by “a spokesman” for the Downeys, but has not been named.
The success of his career can mostly be attributed to his wife’s constant and unflinching belief in him. She has stuck by him since they met on the set of Gothica, which Susan was producing. Downey described her direction as equally businesslike and inspiring. Mel Gibson also took risks with him, in hiring Downey to portray The Singing Detective after his many troubles.
It’s both heartwarming and satisfying to see an actor of the ’80’s generation come of age and blossom as Robert Downey Jr. has. It’s also a triumph over drugs, alcohol, and demons. His future appears bright, with another Sherlock Holmes movie and The Avengers coming up in 2011 and 2012.
