New Ways to Use a Large Walk-In Closet

A walk-in closet is the desire of many, especially those with racks of clothes, dozens of pairs of shoes and other items requiring storage. I had three huge closets in one of my homes. I never thought it was possible to have too much storage space, but I did not need three massive closets. I looked for new ways to use a large walk-in closet, and I came up with a few alternative options.

Use a Large Walk-In Closet as a Small Office

I did not have an office in my home, and I wanted a place where I could escape when I needed silence. I removed the door of my walk-in closet, and I took down the plastic coated wire shelves. I had a track and a barn style door with tempered privacy glass installed. I also purchased a corner desk to make the most of available space, and I installed wooden shelves around the small windowless room. I replaced the domed closet light fixture with a more practical fixture that provided more light. Although I did not always use it to complete my work, it was available when I needed a quiet place to get away from the television and other household noise.

Create a Space for Crafting

I have always wanted a craft room, and my son’s bedroom would have been the ideal place. My ex husband created a beautiful set of shelves with cubby holes. When the kids were grown and on their own, I imagined filling the shelves with paints, boxes of beads and everything I needed to make beautiful creations for my family and friends. I imagined spending my later years enjoying my home. My dreams were dashed when my marriage ended and the house was sold. I would not have my craft space, at least not for the time being.

If I had not used my large walk-in closet as a small office, I would have turned it into a small craft room. I love the Martha Stewart Living Craft Space Collection. I would have outfitted my large walk-in closet with a craft storage hutch, a three-drawer flat file and a craft space storage table. I had plenty of room for all three, and with a lot of square footage to spare.

A large walk-in closet can be used in many of the same ways as a small extra room. Think of how you would use an extra room in your home. If space allows, a place that was once used for storage can be turned into a playroom for the kids or an area especially for pet beds and toys. The options for use are as endless as your dreams.
