“Wake me…when you need me.” Those were the last words the great Master Chief said as he went into cryonic at the end of Halo 3. John-117 who is better known as Master Chief is a video game icon in the gaming industry and will always remain that way. Since Master Chief first made his video game debut in 2001 in the game Halo:Combat Evolved, he has since grown to be the greatest hero in the all of video game history.
He has been the main protagonist in the Halo franchise. He has fought the Covenant and the Flood. He fought the arbiter as his rival, but formed an ally in the end. Master Chief almost always had his computer aid known as Cortana who was with him and eventually formed a spiritual bond throughout the series. The question that ponders many gamers mind is what Master Chief really looks like without his armor. He stands seven feet tall weighing in at 1,000 pounds with his armor. No one knows what he looks like, which helps form an even closer bond to him. Master Chief has always had the distinct appearance with his green armor and distinct deep voice.
After an intense final battle in Halo 3, Master Chief finally defeats the Covenant and on Earth, is known as a hero for all. The Arbiter makes it back to Earth where he shares the story of what all happened in the end. Master Chief did not make it back to Earth as his ship was cut in half during the explosion and was sent to an outer part of the universe. Cortana sends out a distress beacon and Master Chief then enters cryonic sleep where he tells Cortana, “Wake me…when you need me.” That marks the end of Halo 3.
At the time Halo 3 launched, it was announced that it was the last Halo game involving Master Chief. Thankfully, at this year’s E3, it was confirmed that there will be a Halo 4! It will be the first in the new trilogy of the Halo franchise and will continue to have Master Chief as the main protagonist. There are many questions that will need to be known. What happened to Master Chief? What was the unknown planet at the end of Halo 3? Will Cortana continue to be with Master Chief? Will the Arbiter and Master Chief reunite? So many questions, and only time will tell what will be the fate of the greatest video game character ever……John-117…..Master Chief.
