LSU Unanimous No. 1 in Latest AP Top 25 Poll

After a weekend packed with upsets in college football, The Associated Press has made LSU the first unanimous No. 1 team since 2008. The AP Top 25 shifted quite a bit this week, likely serving as a predictor that the Week 12 BCS standings are going to see some changes as well.

The AP Top 25 went through some major changes after both No. 3 Stanford and No. 5 Boise State lost on Nov. 12. That allowed Alabama to move up to No. 3 in the poll, and for Oregon to move up to No. 4. Oregon and Alabama each have just one loss this year at the hands of LSU . That makes this decision to rank Alabama No. 3 pretty controversial, especially in the same week that Oregon just beat Stanford.

With the losses, Stanford falls to No. 8 and Boise State drops all the way to No. 10 in the AP Poll. This ends the shot that both teams had at making it to the BCS National Championship Game and opens the door to several other schools that had one loss already. Oklahoma and Arkansas can suddenly see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel , and could potentially see a bump in the polls with wins in the last two weeks of the regular season. LSU plays Arkansas on Nov. 25 and then Oklahoma State plays Oklahoma on Dec. 3, meaning the top two schools still could lose to another highly ranked team.

It’s remarkable that there has been no regular season unanimous choice at the top of the AP Poll since 2008, but it really shows how a playoff needs to instituted in college football. With voter opinion weighing heavily on what might take place in the last weeks of the 2011 season, it is very likely that one or two teams are going to get held out of the national championship picture instead of getting a deserved shot.

Maybe when the Week 12 BCS standings come out things will become clearer, but now there aren’t really defined reasons why the one loss teams get ranked as they are from No. 3 down to No. 10 in the po lls. Barring an upset though, it looks like a clear path has been laid out for LSU and Oklahoma State to meet in the BCS National Championship Game this year.
