Inlet N.Y: A Winter Wonderland

The Adirondack Mountains are full of family activities all year round, but one of my favorite things to do is pack the kids in the car and head to Inlet for the annual Frozen Fire and Lights Festival in February.

By this time of year I generally feel the need to get outside and enjoy nature, experience the chill in the air and slide down a hill or two and Inlet is the perfect place to do it. The town which is located centrally in the Adirondack State Park is a three hour drive from Albany NY, Burlington VT and Kingston, Ontario Canada.

The festival this year is February 25th from 12:00 to 7:30 and is located in Fern Park near the center of town. Activities include a bonfire with snacks, sledding, ice-skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and even cardboard sled races with prizes. Following these activities is the grand bonfire at Arrowhead Park where everyone can enjoy hot cocoa, donuts, and hot dogs before the beautiful fireworks display over the frozen lake at 7:00.

I go to this event every year with my children and enjoy the winter activities. The town is quaint and beautiful with the streets lined with the work of local ice sculptors on display. The residents are very hospitable and the lodging is plentiful. The best part however is that the entire festival is FREE right down to the snacks during the day and the food at night.

Weather you’re into snowmobiling, ice-skating or just playing in the snow, Inlet is a little town worth checking out.
